Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Chillca

Stop At: Andean Lodges, Cusco Cusco 01 Peru
In a comfortable coach we head along the Vilcanota River to visit the temple of Checacupe, then the upper valley of Pitumarca. At Japura, we'll trek a short distance to Chillca. Locals and musicians playing Andean instruments greet us in your first “Andean Lodge”, as we sip coca tea. Hot showers and full bathrooms as well as 8 double and matrimonial bedrooms are available. We emphasize tasty and nutritious local cuisine (such as Alpaca meat) but vegetarian and other preferences are welcome

Day 2: Chillca Lodge - Machuracay Lodge

Stop At: Andean Lodges, Av. Brasil A-14, Urb, Cusco 08003, Peru
After breakfast we trek alongside thousands of alpacas and llamas in the glacier valley of Phinaya. On the way to more glaciers at Santa Catalina, we climb by the inspiring Pjachaj waterfalls. Above, our picnic lunch await us. Then, surrounded by moraine walls, glaciers and lagoons we walk about 5-hour to Machuracay Tambo. Our bags, carried by a llama caravan, meet us there and the family that runs the lodge will welcome us.

Day 3: Machuracay Lodge - Anantapata Lodge

Stop At: Andean Lodges, Av. Brasil A-14, Urb, Cusco 08003, Peru
Today we take in our first mountain pass (16 587 ft.) with has spectacular panoramic views. Descending alongside the glaciers, we hike to the Ausangate Cocha Lake for lunch.

Here, the landscape dramatically shifts due to the existence of a red sandstone formation where we will see vicuñas and sometimes condors. After a day of great hiking, we arrive at the third “Andean Lodge” ready to relax and enjoy.

Stop At: Ausangate, Cusco 08002 Peru
Mt. Ausangate is located in the Vilcanota Range of the Andes Mountains. It’s about 100 km. southeast of the city of Cusco,

in the Pitumarca district of Canchis Province. The mountain’s main peak is at 6,384 meters (20,944 ft.) altitude above sea level, which makes it visible from the city of Cusco. According to Andean religious belief, since Inca times Ausangate has been considered an Apu, or protective deity and a source of life.

Day 4: Anantapata Lodge - Huampococha Lodge

Stop At: Andean Lodges, Av. Brasil A-14, Urb, Cusco 08003, Peru
After breakfast, we hike the trail up to the next mountain pass. Dropping down, we hike past Lake Kayrawiri, surrounded by rugged mountain peaks and the great valley below. Colorful bands of soil adorn the hillsides. Then, we continue on to Laya Grande Hill via massive Glacier del Inca, to encounter the amazing colors of soil strata at Mt. Vinicunca (the world-renowned “Rainbow Mountain”). We have lunch there, with time for photos and a rest stop in this spectacular landscape. On our way to our fourth Andean Lodge we might see hundreds of Andean geese nesting in the cliffs of Anta. Hiking past the flatiron formations of Mt. Apu Labrayani, we arrive at Huampococha Lodge, where we’ll spend the night in comfort.

Pass By: Cerro Colorado Vinicunca, Apv- Tipon-n11, Cusco 08003 Peru
Mt. Vinicunca (Winikunka in Quechua), is also known as the Rainbow Mountain, or the Mountain of Seven Colors. Andean Lodges, the first tour operator to access the area, has included this natural wonder in its trekking programs for over ten years. The mountain has become more popular over the past five years, and today it receives hundreds of visitors attracted to seeing its vividly colorful soil strata and its breathtaking landscape.

Day 5: Huampococha Lodge - Cusco

Stop At: Andean Lodges, Av. Brasil A-14, Urb, Cusco 08003, Peru
We hike up enjoying an outstanding view of the mountains to reach the top of the last pass. It’s an easy downhill from here. We hike past the strange shapes of a Karst limestone rock forest and continue to the end of the trail at Trapiche. There, we have lunch and return by bus to Cusco, reminiscing about the unforgettable experiences we’ve shared in the Andes

  • What to take with you in terms of clothing: Hiking boots (If they are new, it is important to use them quite a lot before the hike, because it is common for new shoes to cause blisters). Shirts or long sleeved shirts (One per day). Walking pants. Polar or thermal clothing for the hike, sweater and/or vest. Warm coat or jacket. Thermal sleeping clothes. Cotton pants. Wool gloves. Wool socks for sleeping. Hat or cap for the sun. Waterproof pants and “Gore-Tex” jacket or rain poncho. Shoes or sandals, to use inside the lodges. Small towel.
  • What to bring in terms of equipment: Hiking poles to help you maintain stability along the trek. Head or hand lantern. Bottle or canteen. Plastic bag to keep the battery. Plastic bag for dirty or wet clothes. Small backpack (for day trips to enable it to carry snacks, water, change of t-shirt etc.)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen with high SPF, lip balm.
  • "Memory Cards" and/or movies reserve batteries for the camera,etc. (Batteries can be downloaded quickly by low temperatures and there is no possibility to recharge).
  • Toiletries and first aid.
  • We always recommend to all those who wish to book a Trekking Program on the Apu Ausangate's Trail, to give themselves a cautious 3 to 4-day acclimatization time period in Cusco or in places at a similar altitude, which helps them to better enjoy their experience.
