Day 2: Puerto Maldonado Local Breakfast & Orchid Tour – Boat to Eco-Lodge (B, L, D)

Reception at the bus terminal around 7:00am. Transfer to the local office, enjoy breakfast, and take a quick orchid tour. At noon you'll transfer to the boat wharf, Port Captain, where you will begin the 1-hour boat ride to your Eco-Lodge.

Arrive at your Eco-Lodge and settle into your private bungalow. Take a short rest before meeting with your guide followed by an introductory walk around the lodge and its trails. Pass by giant Kapok trees, walking palms and strangler figs while being dazzled by the sounds of native birds. Return to your bungalow for a rest. Go to the dining hall with your guide for your first dinner in the rain forest and enjoy a typical meal from this region.

Day 3: Jungle Walk – Taricaya Reserve (B, L, D)

Breakfast is served from 7 to 8am. Afterward, begin your adventure walking through the trails surrounded by huge trees. Arrive at your first platforms, located 15 and 25 meters high, accessed by a suspension bridge. Continue your walk into the Taricaya reserve, making your way toward the highest tree platform in the Amazon rainforest.

Continue to the reserve's animal rescue center, where you will observe many different wild animals. Stop by the Butterfly House before returning to the lodge for lunch. Take a rest before venturing off on a 25-minute walk to the Agroforestry farm to visit the reforestation projects of mahogany, cedar, cocoa, coffee and tropical flowers. Visit the Taricaya turtle project and its artificial beaches before returning to the lodge in your own inflatable boat. Take a rest before we finish the day’s activities with a caiman search by motorboat along the moonlit river's edge. End the day with a farewell dinner.

It's advertised as 5 days, but it was more like 2 days. Day 1 was a 9pm overnight bus from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado. Day 2 consisted of me sitting around at their office for 5 hours while waiting for the other travelers to arrive. I met the Australian owner when I arrived at his office and, while he was very nice, I felt I was listening to a sales pitch rather than having a conversation with him. I went to his neighbors home, Belinda, where I had a great breakfast you pay for it and good conversation. She has an interesting story to tell! At 1 pm we take a boat to the reservation and the jungle experience begins here. The bungalows were very comfortable, clean, and netted to keep bugs out. The activities, such as the caiman search, jungle walk, canopy walk, ect, were a lot of fun and I learned a lot! The tour guides spoke great English and really tried to make our experience a good one. The conservation area itself was disappointing as it felt more like a zoo than a rehabilitation site. Other than the butterflies, we did not see any of the animals caged here in the wild and I believe this has to do with the constant tourism in the area. The cook was fantastic and they accommodated to my vegetarian diet AND it was tasty! On Day 4, we left the reservation at 8am and arrived back to PM around 9am or so. My bus did not leave until 9pm so I sat around the office most of the time and wandered the town for 2-3 hours. Day 5 was the overnight bus home. Overall, the 2 days I actually spent in the jungle was great! For the cost though, I am not happy about my itinerary and would not recommend it. Many other companies offer the same package and activities besides the animal rehab and plant conservation portion for a much lower price, better use of time. I would look at other options before booking this.
