About this activity
Day 1: Cusco - Patabamba - Huchuyqosqo

Early morning you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the small village of Patabamba (3800m) where our wranglers and group of lamas and mules are waiting. We load the mules up with our gear and start our walk through the high valleys to Pucamarca reaching our first pass at 4200mtr (13,779ft). Along the way we have fantastic views of the surrounding snow capped mountains and we pass some high mountains lakes. After the lunch we continue our afternoon hike visiting different Inca monuments while passing fine Inca stairs before reaching Huchuy Qosqo where our team will be setting up our tents and preparing our dinner.

Overnight at the camp

Day 2: Huchuy Qosqo – Chinchero – Aguas Calientes

After a guided visit of the site Huchuy Qosqo you will continue the hike to the small town of Chinchero taking in some breathtaking views and arriving around noon. You'll then visit a local home for traditional weaving demonstrations where you will also be served lunch. Later in the afternoon, your private transport will drive you to Ollantaytambo, where you will catch the afternoon train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival to Aguas Calientes, you will check into your rooms and have free time for the rest of the night.

Day 3: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

On the third day of the tour, you will wake up early and catch the local transport up to Machu Picchu. A walking tour (approximately 2 hours) is given by your guide in Machu Picchu and afterwards you can explore the mysterious city on your own. If you still have energy and bought the ticket, you can also climb Huayna Picchu (2,720 m/8,923 ft). It takes 45 minutes to reach the top of Huayna Picchu. Upon returning to Aguas Calientes, you will have one last lunch before coming back to Cusco in the afternoon.

This tour was fantastic, it's the best way to see Cusco. Our guide Renato was warm, friendly and spoke proficient English, very clear and easy to understand. He gave my husband and I a full walk-through of the plan the day before our trip. He also gave us the bags to put our clothes and other personal items in, as well as advice on what to eat since we'd arrived that morning and were most definitely going to be feeling the altitude on the hike. Everyone was very nice and helpful, the food was delicious and there was no shortage of it - no matter your appetite. The camping spot for our tent was gorgeous and the sleeping bag was setup on an air mattress, very comfy. The hotel accommodation the following night was lovely as well, we stayed at El Mapi in Aguas Calientes, an eco/sustainable tourism hotel. Last, but not least, Machu Picchu was amazing. It's much larger in person and just incredible. Throughout the whole trip, Renato was funny, patient with our hiking pace, and told us about the history of the land, the people as well as the current state of our surroundings. It was really interesting and it adds a much richer layer to the experience. Only one word of caution: check out the trails ahead of time and be sure you're up for it. This was challenging for me at times because I have asthma, but the crew was great. Everything that they could do to be of help, they did and more. Great group of people, beautiful country, delicious food and rich history all around.
