We start our journey at the incredible Sacred Valley of the Incas, at the basins of the majestic Urubamba River. Sacred valley is a region in Peru’s Andean highlands, it once formed the heart of the Inca Empire. Stretching roughly 60 kilometers, it’s an area of fertile farmland and Spanish colonial villages.
We will drive to a village called Pisac – Pisac is known for its lively handicrafts market in the main square. A path winds from the square past agricultural terraces up to Pisac Archaeological Park, a hilltop Incan citadel with ancient temples, plazas and the Intihuatana, a stone structure thought to have been a sundial.
We will continue through the sacred valley until reaching Calca at 2900 meters above sea, which shall serve as our first stop for lunch. After lunch we will continue to the thermal baths of Lares where we will make our first camp for the night. Our luggage and support team will be waiting for us ensuring an easy and comfortable arrival. The remainder of the afternoon and evening will be free for us to enjoy the thermal pools – which are very relaxing! Continuing along the river for the next few hours, we will arrive at a small village called Cuncani, a high Andean community located around 12,800 feet above sea level. The area is surrounded by a small Quechua community that survives primarily from llama and alpaca herding. This area will also serve home for the night. We shall set up our second camp at this elevation.
After enjoying an exquisite lunch prepared by our chef, we will visit the local villages. We want you to get a glimpse into the life of local communities that call these highlands home. You will also be treated to a demonstration of local weaving, farming and cooking – the way of the Quechua.
