About this activity
On Day 1, leave early from Cusco by bus, arriving at the trail's start to meet up with your porters and cooks. Cross the Piscacucho bridge, then climb to arrive to your lunch stop of Llaqtapata. Cross the Valley of Huayllabamba, where you'll reach your campsite in time for dinner.

On Day 2, trek to Warmihuañusca and enjoy panoramic views of the high, snowy mountains surrounding you at lunch. Descend to your campsite, at Pacaymayu to have dinner and spend the night.

On Day 3, begin to trek up to Runcuracay, an ancient archaeological site. Continue to Sayacmarka (another archaeological area) for lunch. Continue to the Inca city Phuyupatamarca ("City above the clouds") before arriving at Wiñaywayna for dinner and your last night in a tent.

On Day 4, continue to Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) after breakfast, then take a guided tour of Machu Picchu before exploring the famous site on your own. Bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes for lunch at your own expense, then take the train back to Cusco.

  • Plastic water bottles are no longer allowed on the Inca Trail; Nalgene or metal containers are recommended
  • Optional: walking sticks or poles (rubber covers required in order not to damage the Inca Trail)
  • What you should bring: A backpack with a change of clothes, rain coat, sturdy footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended, thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping, sleeping bag, flashlight/headlamp, protection for the sun, rain and cold, insect repellent – minimum recommended 20% DEET, snacks, small towel
