Overnight Hiking and Camping Trip to Rainbow Mountain from Cusco, Peru

2 days
About this activity
Day 1: South Valley and Illapampa (L - D)

Early morning departure from your Cusco hotel for the province of Quispicanchis, home to magnificent Ausangate, the Rainbow Mountains of Peru, and countless other natural wonders. Along the way we'll stop at two beautifully restored colonial churches and scenic lookouts. We'll arrive at our trek departure point midday, and break for a tasty picnic lunch before setting out for our campsite for the night, Illapampa.

Our hike begins with a moderate ascent, then continues through gently sloping meadows filled with grazing alpacas and llamas. We'll camp for the night near the traditional home of an alpaca farming family, and speak with them a bit about their lifestyle and land.

Enjoy a freshly dinner prepared by our cook using local ingredients, then settle into your comfy tent for the evening, or sip a hot drink and enjoy the incredibly starry sky above.

Day 2: Illapampa - Rainbow Mountain - Cusco: (B - L)

After a hearty breakfast, set out on for Peru's Rainbow Mountian! Ascend through dark red mountains, with views of snowy peaks in the close distance. After 1.5 to 2-hour hike, we'll arrive at Vinicunca pass, directly facing the colorful mountain. Enjoy time to explore on your own, take photos and enjoy incredible views of the Rainbow Mountain, Ausangate, and multiple other peaks that dominate the area.

After a break for lunch, we'll begin the return hike, arriving at your Cusco hotel in the early evening.

This trip is a MUST!!! We just returned home from Peru and I HIGHLY recommend this overnight trip with this company and our tour guide Huber! We booked this last minute and they were extremely accommodating to our schedule and made the experience unforgettable. We hiked into the main camp the first day and then hiked to the top of Rainbow Mountain first thing in the morning. We were completely alone at the top for about an hour before the crowds hiked up and it was incredible to be up there alone and to see it all without the masses of people. Huber was so knowledgeable and helpful to our needs and even took us to try Guinea Pig on the way home haha! Altitude sickness is a real thing and it affected 3 out of the 4 of us, but after drinking A LOT of water, we were feeling much better. They did have horses in case we needed a lift to the top, but we were all determined to hike it on our own. The company provided tents, sleeping pads, delicious meals, tea, etc and it was the best food that I had on the trip! We had a personal chef and I could go on and on about how good the soup was! We originally came to Peru to hike Machu Picchu, and we booked Rainbow Mountain as well because we had extra days, and this trip far outweighed my expectations. It was my favorite part of the entire trip to Peru and the mountain are really as beautiful as the pictures show. Also very cool to check hiking at 17,000 feet of altitude from the bucket-list!

Overall very good experience! Despite some altitude sickness that finally avoided us to reach the top, the guide Uber and the food were fantastic, the tent and sleeping bags very confortables. agency and driver Alex put big effort on showing us alternative things on our way back to compensate. Tks!
