Stop At: Island of Goree, Dakar Senegal
A complet guided tour by our wise old man Mr Barry who’s an expert judge of the history of Goree island will take you back into the terrible times of slavery. This symbolic place shows the horrors of the slave trade throughout the Atlantic world. Only 28 hectares in area, Goree Island is aa wonderful peaceful place with around 18000 inhabitants, no far road and no cars ( no fumes )or bicycles . The colonial style houses , wrought-iron balconies, narrow streets and trailing bougainvillea give it a calm Mediterranean feel, and Goree is a popular place for visitors and locals.With its famous doorway also called ‘’ the door of no return ‘’ opening directly from the storeroom onto the sea, the house of slaves has enormous spiritual significance for some visitors , particularly black Americans whose ancestors were bought from Africa as slaves. This house was used to hold many captive slaves.
