Wealth encouraged buildings of architectural significance and academic inspiration, evident in the buildings conserved today and continuing academic recognition, alongside traditional farming, crafts and costumes and the inevitable bustling markets.

As you bask in the peace of floating on a boat across this vast glacial lake 6,470 feet above sea level, fed by three rivers and cradled between mountains, you’ll begin to appreciate the importance of the lake’s ecology for locals. Fishmongers still use trained cormorants to catch fish as did their ancestors.
