The Official SBG Fighting Irish Tour: See, Feel, Live the Experience!
“We’re not here to take part – we’re here to take over”
This is a quote from ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor - mixed martial artist and former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight and lightweight champion. Since uttering these words, McGregor is now the biggest pay-per-view draw in MMA history, having headlined four out of the six highest-selling UFC pay-per-view events in the world.
Born in 1988 in Crumlin, Dublin, we set the scene with a stop at the Crumlin Boxing Club where he began fighting at the age of 12.
Crumlin gets its name from the crooked valley known as Lansdowne Valley. During the medieval period, Dublin was surrounded by manorial settlements comprising church, graveyard, manor house, motte and bailey, farms and cottages. The Old Saint Mary's Church that you will see stands on the site of a 12th-century church of the same dedication.
We make a quick stop at Drimnagh Castle (the only remaining castle in Ireland with a flooded moat around it) , and you also get the chance to take a picture beside the statue of ‘Cu Chuillain’ the fierce warrior and hero from Irish mythology before moving on to Straight Blast Gym Ireland (SBG)
SBG is run by the legendary John Kavanagh, the pioneer of MMA in Ireland. Aside from being one of the most renowned coaches in the world, John Kavanagh has paved the way for ‘The Fighting Irish’ by being Ireland’s first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Ireland’s first MMA fighter in the Cage and by growing and running SBG.
The SBG HQ is a jaw-dropping facility covering just under 10000sq feet and is the highlight of this tour. The gym is not accessible to the general public. Only on this official SBG tour can you step beyond the front desk and into the space that breeds champions. See the memorabilia on the walls, absorb the atmosphere and even step inside the Octagon for a once in a lifetime photo opportunity.
SBG has to be seen to be believed, and is home to UFC's Conor McGregor and a plethora of MMA superstars; Gunnar Nelson, James Gallagher, Artem Lobov and Sinead Kavanagh to name a few. If you’re lucky, you may just get to see them live in training!
There is then a moment to sit and relax with a coffee or protein shake in the 'Le Guillotine' or drop into "The Shoptagon" where you have a chance to purchase some exclusive gear.
NB – You must bring flip-flops (or rent on the day) as there are no shoes allowed in the gym.
