Croatian Traditional Cuisine: Peka Cooking Lesson
4 h
Class
About this activity
The Croation speciality Peka is a delicious option for lunch or dinner and, as this tour is flexible, you get to choose what time you eat!
Named for the bell-like dome that meat and fresh veggies are cooked under, Peka is a hearty and delicious meat and vegetable dish. It may seem simple at first glance but cooking it requires great skill and experience. The domed lid, shaped like a cupola, can be made of metal or cast iron, but true connoisseurs prefer earthenware. Food is cooked underneath the Peka in a fireproof pot under the coals or directly on a stone slab.
Food cooked under Peka, be it in a fireproof pot under the coals or directly on a stone slab, is a hearty meat and vegetable dish. Usually veal, lamb or yearling beef covered with potatoes and other vegetables.
And of course, best enjoyed with a fantastic local red miljas wine!
The program is offered in OPG Vukojević at Village Mokošica and starts when our guide picks you up at your hotel or private apartment. This program has been described, by our clients, as one of the most authentic culinary experiences in Europe!

If you want to get to a really authentic out-of-the-way place in the hills near Dubrovnik for a delicious meal cooked in the traditional way with oak fire, hot bricks and iron bell cooking pot, do this. Yes, it's a bit pricey but wow for the food and for the scenic views. The restaurant is a converted railway station and along the way you will see lots of bunkers left over from the war, and the driver will be happy to tell the stories from times past.
This was the highlight of a week long vacation to Dubrovnik- a must see for any foodies. Flora was an amazing host- friendly, informative, and fun. This is by no means a traditional cooking class- it takes place in his home, with his wife there to assist. There is a demonstration of Peka cooking various meats and potatoes prepared on an outdoor fireplace under a metal dome. Homemade bread, cheese, and olive oil are served while the food is cooking and you are given tons of information about food and even life in general in Croatia. He even has his own homemade prosciutto! Grappa and wine are provided and Florio gave me my own take home bottle of grappa when he discovered I liked it so much. This was an amazing experience and I cannot recommend this enough!
