Itinerary

Day 1: Edinburgh - Inverness

Stop At: Culross Palace, West Green, Culross KY12 8JH Scotland
You leave Edinburgh and begin following the trail of the best-known film locations featured in the Outlander TV Series.

Heading north, your first stop is the charming village of Culross. In Outlander Culross posed as the fictional village of Cranesmuir and the home of Geillis Duncan and her ill-fated husband, Arthur. Exploring the town’s cobbled streets is like taking a step back in time. Look carefully and you may even find Claire’s herb garden behind the impressive, historic Culross Palace.
Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Falkland Palace & Garden, 11 miles north of Kirkcaldy, Falkland KY15 7BY Scotland
We continue to the small town of Falkland to relive the first scenes of the show, where Falkland substitutes for 1940s Inverness. See if you can recognize the familiar sights such as Mrs. Baird’s Guesthouses (The Covenanter Hotel) and the Bruce Fountain, where Claire’s husband Frank sees the ghost of Jamie.
Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Highland Folk Museum, Aultlarie Croft Kingussie Road, Newtonmore PH20 1AY Scotland
In the early afternoon we stop at the Newtonmore Highland Folk Museum, which houses replicas of 18th century turf-roofed Highland crofts. These were used as a setting in the first episode of the show.
Duration: 30 minutes

No meals included on this day.
Accommodation included: Overnight in Inverness

Day 2: Inverness - Glen Affric - Culloden

Stop At: Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, Culloden Moor IV2 5EU Scotland
We start the day with a visit to Culloden, which plays an important role in Scottish history and the Outlander books. It’s not far from the Culloden Battlefield where Claire and Jamie said their tearful goodbyes, before Jamie joined the Jacobite army to fight for the Stuarts. You have the opportunity to explore the visitor centre and site, and pay tribute to those who lost their lives at the last battle fought on British soil.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Clava Cairns, National Grid Reference: NH 757 444 off the B9006, 6 km from Inverness Scotland
Travel through winding back roads and discover a 4,000 year old cemetery.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Castle Leod, Strathpeffer IV14 9AA Scotland
After lunch, we continue to Castle Leod, “home of the Clan MacKenzie”, where you can enjoy a relaxing walk while your guide tells you the history of the clan and area. The castle resembles how Diana Gabaldon described Castle Leoch, however she had never heard of this building prior to writing Outlander.

In the afternoon, you can sample ‘The Water of Life’ with a whisky distillery tour and tasting.

Duration: 1 hour

No meals included on this day.
Accommodation included: Overnight in Inverness

Day 3: Inverness - Castle Leod - Loch Ness - Fort William

Stop At: Glen Affric National Nature Reserve, Cannich Scotland
Lochs, mountains and pine forests: this is one of Scotland’s most glorious glens. It’s also a great hiding spot for Jamie!
Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Glenfinnan Monument, Glenfinnan PH37 4LT Scotland
The monument here commemorates the beginning of the last Jacobite rising. It stands framed by Loch Shiel and bedside a famous section of the Jacobite Steam Train railway line, famously used as the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter.
Duration: 20 minutes

No meals included on this day.
Accommodation included: Overnight in Fort William

Day 4: Fort William - Glencoe - Doune Castle - Edinburgh

Stop At: Doune Castle, Castle Hill, Doune, Stirling FK16 6EA Scotland
One of the most filmed castles in Scotland. It stars as Castle Leoch in Outlander, and featured in Monty Python’s ‘Holy Grail’, and the pilot for Game of Thrones.
Duration: 1 hour

I loved this trip. Our driver/guide, Willie, was great. He supplied us with lots of interesting and historic information on the sites we were visiting, as well as on the Outlander series. He added the nice touch of playing Scottish music that was appropriate to the next site we were visiting. The accommodations were fine, well run and their hosts friendly. What a beautiful country. Outlander or not, this trip has something for everyone.

Our driver Lizzie was the best! Can't imagine anyone being better for our trip. Very knowledgeable on not only Outlander, but Scottish history in general. Learned a lot and had loads of laughs and fun.
