4-Day York, Durham and the Lake District Tour from Edinburgh

4 days
About this activity
Day One
Your tour departs at 0900 from Edinburgh City Centre in a modern Mercedes Benz coach. You travel down through the Scottish Borders to the town of Jedburgh, our first stop of the day. Here you have time for refreshments and to visit Jedburgh Abbey (optional extra).

From Scotland, we then cross over the border to England and take a trip to Hadrian's Wall; Rome's northern border in Europe. The Wall was a defensive fortification and dates back to AD 122, built to keep the Scots out of Rome's Britannia. We spend time here with the option of visiting the Vindolanda Museum and enjoy the beautiful views.

From Hadrian's Wall, we journey through the North Pennines, stopping briefly at the peak of the Hartside Pass to enjoy spectacular views over the countryside, and then continuing to the Lake District, where we check in to our accommodation at Bowness-on-Windermere.

Day Two

After breakfast, we have time to explore the beautiful Lake District and the town of Windermere. Perhaps you will spend your morning visiting The World of Beatrix Potter (optional extra); an enchanting attraction allowing all visitors to experience the world of one of England's famous childrens' writers.

At lunchtime, we continue our tour through the Yorkshire Dales National Park, travelling by Harrogate. We may stop at either Bolton Abbey or Bolton Castle (optional extra), before we end the day in the medieval city of York, checking in to our accommodation.

Day Three

Today is our most flexible touring day; you will have a full day to explore the city of York entirely at your own pace. Attractions include the York Minster, the winding streets of the Shambles, and the Jorvik Centre to glimpse city life in the time of the Vikings. The choice is yours!

Day Four

Our final day begins with a stop in the fishing town of Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay. The bay was a well-known smuggling hotspot in the 18th Century. Spend time exploring the bay, enjoy refreshments, fantastic views over the seaside and breathe in the coastal air!

Leaving Whitby after lunch, we continue on to Durham through the Yorkshire Moors. The city was founded in AD 995 and has a fantastic mix of modern and ancient architecture. Enjoy free time here to see the Cathedral (optional extra) and learn all about its legendary past.

We then begin our return journey home, crossing over the border to Scotland and returning to Edinburgh at approximately 1930.
