About this activity
Any aspiring poet will know you need a place that inspires you in order to bring out your genius, which is exactly why, almost 200 years ago, Sir Walter Scott bought Abbotsford House in the Scottish Borders. Learn about his life as you explore this stunning mansion and its gardens!
Discover a wealth of objects and inspiring artifacts in this amazing home, many of which wound up in Scott’s greatest poems and novels.
Learn about his life on the banks of the River Tweed and the many achievements of the playwright, novelist, poet, and judge.
The beautiful garden looks like it sprung straight from one of Scott’s historical romances - he designed it himself with advice from artists, architects, and friends.
Other highlights include Scott’s 'Juliette' balcony outside his bedroom window, and the 'Rapunzel' tower overlooking the river Tweed.
You may find yourself composing a pastoral poem yourself once you've been here - that's sure what happened to Scott!
