About this activity
Outside our ticket office on the Royal Mile your entertaining, charismatic guide will welcome you and introduce their historical character. They may be Dr Robert Knox (a very unethical eighteenth-century surgeon), Cassandra Bean (a wife, a mother and a cannibal) or Thomas Weir a satanic guardsman. Traverse the Royal Mile and the closes jutting of it; see the site of Scotland’s former parliament and Edinburgh’s infamous old jail.

Next make your way to Greyfriars Kirkyard, find out about the legendary poltergeist and the other ghosts who call this cemetery home. This graveyard was also a hotbed for bodysnatching during the early nineteenth century. Discover how the rich protected the remains of their loved ones and the story behind Edinburgh’s most feared grave robbers – William Burke and William Hare.

For the final part of the tour the guide will show off our section of underground. You will see walls from former houses, eighteenth-century bridgework and even the modern street above through our skylight. When you’re underground though beware the long dead former inhabitants still seen from time to time on our tours inside the dark chambers. The tour ends with your guide leading you out of the underground and back to our ticket office.

Our guide did a great job telling history and some ghost stories as we visited a old town, graveyard and the underground vaults. Our guide may have been too smiley and nice looking for the position. Possibly a scarier type of person to make the experience more haunting. There needed to be a creepy, scary extra person in vault area to give it more of a scary thrill. Possibly a real casket, etc. should have been added to graveyard or vault area to enhance the scary atmosphere.

Y niece and I were the only two on the tour. Fun having a private tour. The Tour Guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. Highly recommend.
