About this activity
Take a day trip from Edinburgh to discover the Scottish Highlands and the famous Loch Ness. Begin your journey by bus heading north from Edinburgh past the inspiring sculptures of the Kelpies and the imposing Stirling Castle. Pass the Trossachs, cross Rannoch Moor, and stop at the dramatic Glen Coe, the site of the infamous massacre in 1692. Pass through Fort William, one of the largest settlements in the Scottish Highlands, before driving through the Great Glen. All the while your guide will talk you through the most important and interesting sights of the region.

When you arrive at Fort Augustus, a charming Highland village on the banks of the famous Loch Ness, take a leisurely stroll through the village or simply relax by the Caledonian Canal. Enjoy a locally produced ‘Taste of Scotland ’picnic lunch that includes a bottle of Scottish mineral water, a choice of freshly made sandwiches and shortbread. If you want to learn more about Scottish cuisine, your guide can direct you to some great local cafés for more tasty treats.

You also have the opportunity to take a 1-hour boat cruise on the loch (own expense). Discover the mysteries of the legendary Nessie monster on a custom-built boat designed specifically for sailing on this loch, equipped with the very latest underwater imaging technology, giving you a fascinating view of the terrain and life under the surface. Relax with a coffee or beer at the onboard bar.

Your journey continues past the shimmering Loch Laggan and then over the Pass of Drumochter, the main mountain pass connecting the northern and southern Scottish Highlands. Heading south, pass Perthshire and Big Tree Country, filled with lush forests, rivers and mountains, before getting an impressive view of Forth Bridge. Your Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands day tour ends in Edinburgh around 8pm.

We had the lovely Jo as our driver for the trip to the Highlands and Loch Ness. She was knowledgable and unlike other drivers (often who bore you with stories during a coach trip) she was very well spoken and entertaining. We had a fault on the coach, on our way back to Edinburgh, but she dealt with it very professionally, didn't alarm us and the problem was dealt with swiftly. My only suggestion would be that perhaps the stops could be at better locations. The last stop we had was in a town that had hardly any places open, so would be good to have another location, but I understand that isn't always be possible.

Even though it's a long drive to Loch Ness, the beauty of the highlands and the nice (and funny) information from the guide are worth it. We got lucky with great subby weather as well as a wonderful guide like Fiona. I will definitely recommend this tour to anyone.

This is a day tour starting from Edinburgh and visiting Glencoe, Loch Ness. The 12-hour tour with Tour guide Michael was very enjoyable. Michael drove the bus most of the tour, but at the same time he was trying his best to inform travelers about Scotland. He had a very thorough knowledge of Scotland as a whole and added a funny explanation of the excessive city, castle, and even sheep as we move on. He was a very pleasant and passionate guide. Thanks to him, I got to know more about Scotland, which helped me greatly with my schedule in Edinburgh later. By the time the tour was over, he even recommended some restaurants and bars in Edinburgh. The Highland Tour with Michael was fun enough to invest a whole day of my three days in Edinburgh. and I am willing to rejoin if there is another Scottish tour with him.

Our tour guide/bus driver was Michael. He was personable, informative and a wonderful guide. Kept us informed, and even gave us extra info and picture stops since we were ahead of schedule. The tour itself was wonderful, would have loved to have more time at Loch Ness, but all in all, was able to enjoy all the aspects of the Scottish Highlands.

Loved the tour and the experience of the highlands. Tour guide was Glenn and he was awesome. Loved his Scottish music and his knowledge. I sat up front and talked his ear off. Great location to start and easy to find.

Our party of 6 with adults, children and seniors had a very enjoyable trip with Calum as our driver/tour guide! Calum was funny, informative and kept us entertained on the long bus ride. Even though it was over 350 km of travels within 11 hours, we made a couple of quick stops on the way to Loch Ness and one stop on the way back to Edinburgh. The actual time at Loch Ness was about 1.5 hours. If you take the cruise, it may not offer a lot of time to walk around town and visit those cute shops. The lunch sandwich provided was quite good too, it came with a non-plastic bottle water and shortbread. I'd recommend Highland Explorer if you only have 1 day to see the Highlands. Hope you will get Calum too!
