Stop At: Midhope Castle, South Queensferry, Edinburgh, Scotland

Used as Lallybroch (also known as Broch Tuarach), Midhope Castle is a 16th-century tower house located in Abercorn, just west of South Queensferry, on the Hopetoun estate. As we can see below, it is every bit as impressive in real life as Lallybroch, with the familiar approach and entrance to the building.
Left to Jamie by his parents, Brian and Ellen, Lallybroch is also home to Jamie’s sister, Jenny, her husband Ian Murray and their children. With Lallybroch being an important part of the Outlander story, much use is made of Midhope Castle.

Stop At: Craigmillar Castle

This medieval castle appears as Ardsmuir Prison in episode 3, ‘All Debts Paid’, of Outlander season 3. It is here that Jamie is imprisoned, with other highland Jacobites. The prison is under the control of Lord John Grey.
Craigmillar Castle is a ruined medieval stronghold located three miles southeast of Edinburgh. Known for having provided Mary Queen of Scots refuge in the 1500s, it is also where Scottish nobles plotted to kill Mary’s second husband Lord Darnley.

Stop At: Falkland Palace & Garden, Falkland, Fife, Scotland

Used briefly in “The Hail Mary”, Falkland Palace is used as the apothecary where Claire meets Mary Hawkins, who is buying medical supplies to attend to the sick Alex Randall.
Located in the heart of Falkland, Falkland Palace was a popular country residence with the Stuart monarchs, being a particular favourite of Mary Queen of Scots. It is close to other Outlander locations in the town, including the Covenanters Hotel (used as Mrs Baird’s B & B) that is less than 100 metres away.

Stop At: Culross Palace, Culross, Fife, Scotland

The lovely town of Culross, in Fife, in has been used in several Outlander episodes. The town is owned by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) who have been instrumental in helping preserve the town’s historical buildings, many dating to the 18th century.
The town is best remembered as being used as Cranesmuir in season 1. Much of the town was painted a dark grey colour for filming, which has reverted to the original white. Despite this, there is no mistaking this idyllic-looking location. And, with a wealth of beautiful buildings it was in demand once more for season 4.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Blackness Castle, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland

Located not far from the village of Blackness, Scotland, Blackness Castle is an impressive 15th-century fortress. It was used in Outlander to represent Fort William, where Jamie had received lashes from Captain Randall. It is also where Jamie’s father died, having to endure watching his son being punished.
Built by the Crichton family in the 15th century, Blackness Castle is one Scotland most impressive strongholds. It has been used as a royal castle, prison and weapons store as well as a location for the filming of Hamlet. Shaped like a ship the castle is often referred to as ‘the ship that never sailed’. The castle is looked after by Historic Environment Scotland, a charitable organisation that protect and promotes many of Scotland’s historic sites.
