Loch Lomond, The Highlands and Stirling Castle Day Trip from Edinburgh

1 day
Full Day
About this activity
Departing Edinburgh we head to the West of Scotland to Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, and enjoy a tour of the sights to see how this once industrial city has become very cosmopolitan and recently hosted the common wealth games and in previous years has won the European City of Architecture and Culture Awards.

After Glasgow we head to the Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, Britain's largest expanse of water. We arrive at the enchanting Village of Balloch where you will have the option to join a boat cruise of the Loch. Balloch is often referred to as the gateway to the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The Loch Lomond and Trossachs area is a place where the magnificent landscape has fired the imagination of writers and artists for centuries.

Our next stop will be at the charming village of Aberfoyle. With its lochs, glens and mountains; this area is often described as “Highlands in Miniature” and you can see why the Highland scenery was Sit Walter Scott’s favorite destination, he even used the location as the backdrop for his movies “Rob Roy” and “The Lady of the Lake”. Here we will have time to have lunch, enjoy the quaint shops and have a stroll around the village.

After enjoying beautiful scenery, our final stop of the day will be Doune - a well preserved 14th century Castle, set amid lovely Stirlingshire countryside.

Take an audio tour of the Castle* which is narrated by Monty Python's Terry Jones. Hear the exciting history of the medieval Castle and residents. Doune Castle is the atmospheric stand-in for the fictional Castle Leoch in the TV show Outlander and has also been used as a film location for Game of Thrones.

Gray Line offers you a 10% discount on the ticket price to Doune Castle

Suitable and relaxing music will be played during your comfortable drive back to Edinburgh.

Due to insufficient amount of people registered for Loch Lomond tour, we were offered either reimbursement or alternative Loch Ness tour, so we chose Loch Ness tour. Very smooth pick up and drop off, advices and tips along the way from the guide. Everything was very nice and settled down, the guide was very informative and overall positive, though the only advice probably would be to take headphones in case you might get tired of constant flow of information from guide along the way and just would want to enjoy the scenery in silence or with music :) Wonderful nature, lovely panoramas. However, on the next trip I am definitely will do my best to make sure I am getting to Loch Lomond that is actually more preferred trip destination for locals, as Loch Ness seemed to be more of the another touristic must see place.

Original tour program that we booked for was changed by Viator at the last moment and was offered Loch Ness .... tour instead. We took this tour as we were not given any other choice. It was a full day tour on Mar 19th. Attraction was good. We had to pay extra for ferry ride. Tour guide was the bus (GrayLine bus # PSU 612) driver, Mr. Dougie. His tour commentary was like he was reading from a script about the places while he was driving; not like telling the story of the places to make the tour interesting and enjoyable for the tourists and his English communication was poor and not at all clear in most of the time. He doesn't seem to be a tourist/customer friendly person. We were not at all happy with his negative attitude towards customers and he was reluctant to answer questions. He becomes grumpy and irritated with any questions. He doesn't seem to enjoy his work with tourists or may be he becomes tired of working for a long day operating the bus and talking on the microphone. He was also driving carelessly, which is unsafe for the travellers. We were not at all impressed with his irritating behaviour. However, this is just a fact that I am stating. Tourists would like to have a guide who should be knowledgeable, enthusiastic, customer-friendly, smiling, personable, humorous and highly professional - so that people can enjoy their travel. The guide has to understand, people are paying for the service, it's not a free service. We could not enjoy the tour in full due to this driver's unfriendly attitude. I hope Viator will make sure to improve the quality of their tour services. Thanks!

Stirling Castle was amazing! I just think it was so hard for the people who lived during the times when there was great war and suffering and how they managed to build these huge castles on the top of rock. Loch Lomond was okay, It rained the entire boat ride so I couldn't get any photos. I do believe that if the weather would have been pretty the boat ride would have been more appealing. The rest of the trip was well planned. I felt like we had traveled very far and the entire tour we were very close to Edinburgh. Our guide was funny and made sure that we got the most out of our tour.

Graham was a great driver and tour guide. We were sorry that we couldn't see Glasgow due to the Run.
