The ultimate underground journey through Edinburgh's darkest history combines live actor shows, special effects, thrilling rides and 360° theatrical sets.

Come face to face with Edinburgh's most notorious rogues as a cast of professional actors bring Scotland's murky history to life. You'll meet cannibal Sawney Bean, Edinburgh's baddest witch Agnes Finnie, notorious serial killers Burke & Hare, a 17th century Plague Doctor and more! Will you dare take up the challenge of the Drop Ride to Doom at the Grassmarket Gallows?
• Discover Edinburgh’s scary fun history
• Boat ride, drop ride and interactive live actor shows

As you enter the queue line, allow yourself to feel immersed in Edinburgh’s narrow cobbled closes and wynds (small side streets). You are about to come face to face with the city’s most notorious rogues and villains and discover the dark side of Scotland’s long history.

Your underground journey takes through different periods of Scottish and Edinburgh history, with live actors recreating some of the more dark and tragic episodes of the past – all with the unique Dungeon blend of tongue-in-cheek humour, scary fun entertainment and audience participation.

Come face-to-face with Sawney Bean and his cannibal family – he’d love to have you for dinner! Will you escape the plague in Mary King’s Close, or end up with boils on your sweaty bits? Be found VERY guilty by Judge Mental and accused of witchcraft by Edinburgh’s baddest witch Agnes Finnie! You’ll meet Burke & Hare, the city’s most notorious serial killers and encounter ghosts from the past… Experience the sights, sounds and even smells of Edinburgh, culminating in the thrilling Drop Dead Ride to Doom at the Grassmarket gallows!

Itinerary:

The Courtroom:

Enter the dingy, 17th century Edinburgh courtroom and prepare to be judged for your heinous crimes! Judge Mental will either find you guilty or… VERY GUILTY!

There’ll be nowhere to hide from the beady eyes of the Judge – a classic Dungeon show, the only question that matters is just what are you guilty of?

Get into that dock and find out!

Witch’s Judgement:

Have you met Agnes? She loves a good pricking!

You are now entering the Witch Pricker’s interrogation chamber where you’ll come face to face with Agnes Finnie – accused of witchcraft in 1645. She’s mad, she’s bad, she’s not to be messed with! But are you a witch too? Protect yourself from accusations of sinister sorcery or you might be burned alive! Let’s face it, nobody wants a human barbecue...

The Torture Chamber:

Abandon all hope, peasants, as you find yourselves in a 17th century Torturer’s underground chamber! Suspected witches won’t get away easily – the Torturer is VERY good at their job and always looking for 'volunteers'’ to test their implements on. Preferably up that place where the sun don’t shine… and they don’t mean Glasgow!

The Torturer’s going to get you by butcher’s hook or by crook and can’t wait to make you squirm!

This show is consistently one of our highlights - delighting and repulsing in equal measure. Just remember, like any artist The Torturer has his sensitive side

The Galloway Boat Ride:

King James’ I men have roped YOU into their search party, on the hunt for Sawney Bean’s ravenous family who have been murdering nearby villagers. They can’t wait to have you for dinner! You’ll embark on a boat ride through the gloomy caves of Galloway, filled with strange and eerie sounds. Is that a bat? Rats? Or the horrible crunching of bones and teeth?

The Cannibal’s Cave:

Well done! You’ve found Sawney Bean’s Family. Unfortunately, it’s been a while since they last ate and you look delicious…

It’s the 16th century and you find yourself creeping through the Bean clan’s foul-smelling lair to discover the leftovers of lost travellers. Have the hunters become the hunted? Will you escape, or become the cannibal’s next fresh meat?

The Anatomy Theatre:

Something funny in your tummy? Don’t worry, Doctor Knox would LOVE to pull out all your bits…

Medical science always needs a volunteer, so it’s a good job you just stepped into Dr Knox’s Anatomy Theatre! You are a 19th-century medical student here to witness the autopsy of one of Burke & Hare’s victims – Edinburgh’s most notorious serial killers! Hope you don’t mind the sight of blood!

BURKE & HARE:

Burke & Hare are on the prowl, looking for their next unsuspecting victim. At 7 pounds, 10 shillings a corpse, there's money to be made and they'd kill for a body like yours!

It's 1828. Edinburgh is the leading centre of medical research, its anatomy schools heaving with students keen to observe a live dissection. There's only one problem. There's not enough bodies to go around! Grave-robbing isn't cutting it. The corpses are too... musty. Enter Mr William Burke & William Hare. They've spotted a lucrative business opportunity. The business... of murder!

MARY KING'S CLOSE:

Welcome to 17th-century Edinburgh where the streets are filthy and the plague is rife! Watch out for shouts of “Garde Loo!”

You’ll meet the Foul Clenger – or plague cleaner - as they tell you the true story of Edinburgh’s most famous plague close. You’ll learn how to spot the signs of plague – so look out for itches in your sweaty bits, or bubos on your pits. Is that just a cough you say? Too late, you’ll be locked away!

MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS:

Three strikes and you're... DEAD! It’s 8 February 1587 and Mary Queen of Scots is about to get her heid chopped off!

Welcome to Loch Leven castle – where Mary Queen of Scots has been put on trial for treason and is now imprisoned awaiting execution. Accused of plotting to assassinate her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, Mary is about to face the chop. And no, we don't mean a juicy steak.

On the day of her beheading, two blows of the axe weren’t even enough to do the job. It took a further struggle with a serated knife to sever her bloody head. Hungry, anyone?

DROP DEAD: THE GRASSMARKET GALLOWS

You’ve made it to the Grassmarket and a crowd has gathered to see you pay for your sins. Lucky you! Your executioner will show you the ‘ropes’.

The crowd cheers and it's your turn to face the drop. The noose is ready as are the judge, priest and executioner. The thrilling gravity-defying drop marks the scary fun end to your Dungeon journey!

Drop Dead Drop: The Grassmarket Gallows is an exhilarating vertical free fall drop ride. The minimum height restrictions for the ride is 1.4 metres.

It is an interesting experience if you want to be part of the show. Part of the show are the punishments and you play a guilty party who deserve be punished, what could be funny for others. I would not repeat it.
