Tour to the Queen's View, Pitlochry, and the Sma' Glen from St. Andrews
1 day
About this activity
Meet your private driver-guide at 8am at your St. Andrews accommodation — or upon arrival by cruise ship — and jump aboard your air-conditioned minivan alongside the rest of your travel companions (maximum eight passengers).
Take in the scenery as you drive up north past Perth and Dunkeld, arriving at Edradour just before 10am. Take the time to experience the whisky distillery on a guided tour (extra cost), and perhaps sample a wee dram of Scotch. Then, head into Pitlochry, a lovely Highland town established in Victorian times. Talk a wander down by the river, where you may be lucky enough to see a salmon or two leaping; do some shopping, or pop into one of the cafes or pubs for lunch (own expense).
Next, travel the few miles north to the Queen's View, a spectacular viewpoint over Loch Tummel, which Queen Victoria is said to have remarked was named after her when she visited the area in 1866. Make sure to get a few photos of this beauty spot before once again boarding the minivan to begin your journey south, this time through the pretty valley of Sma' Glen. The fast-flowing River Almond runs along the narrow valley floor and the glen itself is rather small, only four miles (6.5 km) in length. The Romans built a fort and watchtower here, and the glen featured in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire.
At the northern end of the Sma' Glen keep an eye out for Clach Ossian or Ossian's Stone, an 8-foot- (2.4-meter-) high monolithic stone sited where the river and the road almost touch. This is reputed to be the burial place, in about 300 AD, of the legendary Gaelic bard Ossian.
Back on the bus once more, head back to St. Andrews to be dropped off at your hotel or port.
