About this activity
The infamous vaults hidden under the South Bridge in Edinburgh Old Town fill the nineteen stone arches of this underground architectural wonder. Join our knowledgeable guide to hear why the vaults were built and why they were eventually abandoned...

Hear tales of how the homeless and destitute community of Edinburgh sought refuge in these former slums. What was it really like to live in the darkness? Who were the criminals that stalked the vaults and what did they want? Explore the candlelit Niddry's Wynd, forgotten on today's maps, with your costumed guide.

The tour commences at the Tron Kirk on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh Old Town. Learn what the town was like in the 1700s, what diseases were feared by the overcrowded population, and what happened to the household waste? You will see a genuine witchcraft temple, recently used by the “Source Coven of the Blue Dragon” and you will enter their former temple. You are advised to listen to the guide carefully BEFORE making a decision to step inside the haunted stone circle!

Finally we invite you to experience the eerie atmosphere of the Haunted Vault itself, home to the majority of our many reported sightings... will you be brave enough to enter?

Photographs are recommended, you may even discover something ghostly on them! Please do get in touch with us after the tour to share your experiences with us...

The tour was disappointing. We were looking for a history tour of the vaults it was between this one and mercat whom own/rent a section of the vaults. We probably should have gone the other. The tour was suppose to be one hour. At 5pm we were met by our tour guide whom then took us to the ticket office. She continually checked her watch advising us she wanted to ensure of the time we started. We think it was more about what time she could clock off to go home as it was the last tour of the day. The tour did not start until about 5.10pm, with an explanation of each and every tool that was used for torture. Torture is was as it felt like a time filler and way too much time on the explanation and inappropriately positioning people to demonstrate. Between yawns we finally got to go down to the vaults and we hoped to hear some history. The tour was more about the guide asserting her credentials and her experiences with a focus on the ghost she could see and whether we could also see them. The tour then finished at 5.50pm. As we were chatting at the front we saw our guide promptly finishing work at 6pm. It was not an hour and not what was described. For us it was a waste of time and money.

Sppoky, scary, creepy....and historical. The guide was very informative and created an atmosphere of a paranormal environment. If you like the supernatural this is a must.

The person who was supposed to lead the tour was not there or did not know we were on the tour. When I asked about the Viator tour I got a look like he was seeing a zombie with leprosy. We looked for any one who may be conducting the tour and found no body. Other street tour people in the area did not know any thing about Viator tours or where they started. We arrived 20 minutes early and left 10 minutes after the tour was supposed to start. A total waste if time and money. I will decline the charges when the credit card charges come thru. A two plus week trip and this was the very low point. I had been wanting to take this trip when I planned on going to Great Britain and I got ..rewed.

The tour person we were supposed to meet did not know anything about our reservation. He said he did not know anything about Victor or who did their tours. He did nothing to help us, just ignored us. He took a group on some tour and left us standing there. We got there 20 minutes early and stayed around for 10 minutes after the tour was supposed to start. I will contest the charges for this tour with my credit card provider. Totally teffible experience.

Interesting. Not too long but spooky. Fun to go on.

This tour was advertised as a historical underground tour. It was more of a poorly acted crass ghost story. Save your money.
