Viedma Peninsula Trek from Puerto Bahia Tunel
The Viedma Glacier, located within Los Glaciares National Park, in the Province of Santa Cruz, is the largest glacier in Argentina. In older times, it was believed to be the Upsala Glacier, but according to the latest studies the Viedma glacier possesses a larger surface (978 Km2) This glacier runs directly from the Southern Patagonic Ice Field up to Lake Viedma, and its front wall rises 40 meters above the lake level. Its sources are located in the heart of the Ice Field at 1,500 to 2,000 meters over sea level.
The Viedma Glacier shows some dark lines on its surface, which are volcanic ash bands, blended with the ice. In the last few years, it has undergone significant retreats.
Its tongue is detached from the Patagonic Ice, West from Mariano Moreno range, along the Glacial Fracture Valley located between Mount Huemul (2,677 m) and Mount Campana (2,570 m).
During this journey you will approach the glacier to observe it from different heights and natural viewpoints, appreciating its immensity and the play of colors.
