About this activity
Visit: Windsor Castle, Castle Hill, Windsor SL4 1PD England

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. It has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years and is today one of the official residences of Her Majesty The Queen. In May 2018, the Castle was provided a spectacular backdrop to the wedding of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which took place in St George's Chapel.

Occupying over 10.5 hectares, the Castle offers a varied day out for visitors, including a visit to the magnificent State Apartments and St George's Chapel, and an opportunity to see the tiny treasures of Queen Mary's Dolls' House. The Castle's State Apartments are furnished with some of the finest works from the Royal Collection, reflecting the changing tastes of the Castle's royal occupants, particularly those of Charles II and George IV. Among the masterpieces on display are paintings by Holbein, Rubens and Van Dyck, Sèvres porcelain and exquisite English and French furniture. Many of the works of art are still in the historic settings for which they were first collected or commissioned by the kings and queens who have lived at Windsor.

Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the Castle with a free multimedia tour. From September to March, visitors can also walk through the sumptuous Semi-State Apartments, which served as the private rooms of George IV in the 19th century.

We took the advice of other travellers and arrived after 11- no lineup at all. Admission was very easy - just exchanged the voucher for a ticket. The headphones worked beautifully and were absolutely essential to really appreciate what we were seeing. Would definitely recommend setting aside 3 hours or so for a visit to the Castle. We also took the (free) introductory 30 minute tour and it was excellent for providing context.

Because we bought prepaid tickets we were able to bypass a long lineup. The trip round the castle and St.George's Chapel was spectacular and the audio guide was great.

So glad I purchased this ticket in advance, especially on a sunny Saturday! Jumped the line, loved the castle. Spectacular! A must!

Buying in advance saved a lot of queuing and provided easy entry to the busy castle. Fantastic visit.
