Stop At: Castelo de Silves, Rua do Castelo, Silves 8300-144 Portugal

It's believed that the first fortifications were built upon a possible Lusitanian castro, by the Romans or Visigoths. Between the 8th and 13th centuries, the castle was occupied by the moors who expanded it, making it one of the best preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal resulting in its classification as a National Monument in 1910.

Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Ponta Da Piedale, M536, Lagos 8600-544 Portugal

Consisting of yellow-golden cliff like rocks up to 20 meters high, they are one of the most famous touristic attractions of Portugal. Several grottos in Ponta da Piedade can be visited by boat. The location also contains a lighthouse, dating back to 1913.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Cape Saint Vincent, Estrada Cabo de Sao Vicente En 268, Sagres 8650-390 Portugal

A headland in south westernmost point of Portugal and of mainland Europe.

Stop At: Fortaleza de Sagres, 8650-360, Sagres Portugal

The 16th century bulwark-like fortress was severely damaged during the Great Earthquake of 1755. It was restored in the mid 20th century, but there is still a 16th-century turret present. After passing through the thick tunnel entrance, one sees a giant pebble compass rose (rosa dos ventos) of 43 m diameter.

We have recently returned from a small group tour to Sagres, Lagos and Silves and can’t praise it too highly. We were fortunate to have Thiago as a guide, whose knowledge and enthusiasm were second to none. Nothing was too much trouble and he showed us all the sites only a local would know. As we were the only two on the tour, it was more like being shown around by a good friend than being herded about on a well worn guided tour, and we gained a lot of knowledge of Portuguese life and society we would not otherwise have gleaned. All the sites were fascinating and the optional boat trip along the coast from Lagos was well worth the additional 20 euros each. If you are going to do a tour of the western algarve, don’t hesitate and book this one. It is more expensive than some of the larger group tours, but an utterly wonderful and much more personal experience. Whatever the company pay Thiago, it isn’t enough. He is a credit to them and a superb ambassador for Portugal. A brilliant day out; the highlight of our holiday.

First the pros.....I definitely recommend doing this trip (and the Eastern side trip on another day) during your stay in the Algarve. You get to see so many things that you might not be able to see on your own. Daniel the driver/guide is the man! Very friendly and knowledgeable. Born and raised in the Algarve, he is very proud of his heritage and culture, he will answer any and every question you may have during the trip and will keep your interest throughout. Many beautiful sights are shown and great history is told throughout the day. You will not be disappointed! Now for the cons....The only thing I didn't like about the trip is that there is no wi-fi in the van as advertised in the website and each stop during the Western trip should be a little longer. A few stops seemed a little too rushed. So maybe an earlier departure or a later return allowing for an extra 15-20 min. at each stop would make a huge a improvement. Other than that though, it was a great day and highly recommended if you want to see the best of the Algarve!
