About this activity
This unique historical highlight tour gives visitors an educational and fun experience in Ocho Rios with the Seville Heritage Park and Fern Gully packaged together for a fulfilling day for all ages and the family. Dubbed the birthplace of modern Jamaica, the Seville property was where Christopher Columbus first encountered the Taino Indians on May 5th, 1494. Today the Heritage Park is a charming 300-acre property that allows you to step back in time to explore the very beginning of Jamaica's history and culture. The plantation's Great House is now used as a museum which was recently renovated and offers an insightful and informative tour of the period 650AD to late 19th century Jamaica when the Taino Indians, Spanish, English, and Africans inhabited the area. After your Seville experience, we will make our way into Ocho Rios through a winding road leading to Fern Gully, a unique rainforest which boasts hundreds of different varieties of ferns. Many writers such as Marianne North, Lady Brassey, and Antonio Gallenga wrote about Gully Road on their voyages to Ocho Rios. No one knows the origin of the Fern Gully but it is said that it possibly started out with an underground river flowing through caves which later collapsed revealing Fern Gully to the world. Others have suggested that it formed in the 1760s by a flash flood. Here, you will take an easy 2-mile guided hike where you will encounter amazing vegetation. There will be a stop along the way where you can purchase a souvenir from one of the many craft vendors in the Gully. Food is another part of Jamaican culture! your next stop will be at a local jerk restaurant to experience one of Jamaica's most desired dishes before heading back to your hotel or cruise ship.
