Stop At: Sao Bras de Alportel, Sao Bras de Alportel, Faro District, Algarve
Travelling up into these hills you will explore the traditional villages of the area, still conserving the traditional architecture and way of life
This Tour takes us to the rolling hills of the Caldeirão Mountains, between thyme and lavender plants and carob trees, where we can hear the babbling of the streams and discover the skills of the craftspeople.
In the historical centre of São Brás, there are whitewashed, single-storey houses built in the popular architectural style, and the grand houses of the former industrialists and businessmen of the cork trade, with their façades clad in tiles, carved stonework and wrought-iron verandas. There is a fine view up to the hills of the Caldeirão from the courtyard of the Main Church.
We then go into the palace which houses the Ethnographic Museum of Costumes of the Algarve which relives the days when they used to dance the “corridinho” on the threshing floors at threshing time.
The cork from São Brás de Alportel is one of the best in the world and the Algarve is its world's largest grower and exporter, with the cork from this region being used for everything from fine wines to fashion and even NASA spaceships.
We get to Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo in search of the tile makers who have been there for centuries. There is a smell of holmoaks on the air, or the almond shells burning in the ovens where the tiles and Moorish roofing tiles are baked. In the orchards all around, almond and orange trees flourish and the single storey houses have pieces of stone in the white of the lime washed walls.
Next we are off to visit the beautiful and tranquil Moinhos da Rocha waterfall and lake. This stunning natural pool and waterfall, hidden away in these hills, is the perfect spot to relax.
Depending on the time of year, have a swim in its tranquil waters, or the more adventurous can dive in from the rock cliff that encircles half the pool. This truly spectacular natural pool is one of the many natural gems of this area.
