Why You Shouldn’t Miss This

Tuscany, a region in central Italy, is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea on one side. It is renowned for its tradition, history and gorgeous landscape. Often regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance in Italy, it contains numerous museums and is a hub for science and art. Tuscany also produces well-known wines such as Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. Popular tourist destinations such as Pisa and Florence that are known for their architectural heritage are also located in this region. Seven of the localities in Tuscany are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the historical centers of San Gimignano, Pisa’s Cathedral Square and the city of Siena.

Your Experience

Your tour will take you through the renowned town of Tuscany. The minivan will pass by the gorgeous rolling hills of Italy as you make your way to Siena. Here you will see the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, which hosts the Palio horse races biannually. The Municipal Palace and the Mangia Bell Tower can also be found in the square.

The Siena Cathedral is a prime example of the confluence of Classical, Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The front facade is made up of numerous gargoyles and sculptures. A massive mosaic piece by Luigi Mussini that represents the Coronation of the Virgin can be seen at the very top. The bronze door gives the cathedral a majestic and imposing feel. Next up on the itinerary is a visit to Monteriggioni. Your minivan will then pass through the Chianti groves and vineyards. You will walk through the heart of the city and the medieval town with its eleven towers. This has remained largely unchanged since its inception. A little distance away is a charming estate, where you will be served a typical Chianti lunch made from local delicacies. You will have an opportunity to taste wines from a selection of Chianti and Vernaccia wines, made right at the farm’s winery.

San Gimignano is next on the itinerary. The presence of straight streets and planned layout along with numerous towers has caused it to be dubbed the ‘Manhattan of the Middle Ages’. The fragrance of saffron and white Vernaccia from nearby hills wafts through the entire city, and this combined with the numerous attractions are a treat for your senses! A stroll through the town will take you to the Piazza Della Cisterna, where you can see incredible frescoes from the 14th century. A few of the Benozzo Gozzoli frescoes at the Church of Sant’Agostino are sure to leave you in awe. You will then continue on to Pisa, one of the most famous cities in Italy. At the Piazza Dei Miracoli, the three marble masterpieces - the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Leaning Tower - can be seen. As you set your eyes on these magnificent structures, you will be able to appreciate the skill and artistry of these 13th-century architects and engineers.
