Stop At: Chianti Road, Italy

Our bilingual driver/tour manager will pick you up at the central train station of Florence, platform number 16 at 9:00am. Then we will start driving around via Setteponti between Castelfranco di Sopra and Castiglion Fibocchi. We will stop in at least 3 local wineries on the way, for a wine tasting and visit of the cellars. In this area, unlike the Chianti or Montalcino areas, all the farmers can produce whatever wine they like, without any restrictions. Therefore, you will have the opportunity to discover the real local family producer and their deep passion for making organic wine, sometimes still with really old techniques. We will have lunch at one of the wineries and we will most definitely visit the “Borro”, the recently renovated Borgo of Salvatore Ferragamo. The via Setteponti follows the traces of what was once the Etruscan and Roman routes connecting two major points of interest: Florence and Arezzo. Once known as Cassia Vetus, the via Setteponti (Seven Bridges Road) is thus named because it spans the flowing streams and rivers from the Pratomagno heights at least seven times. The continuous curves expose several totally unique vistas including pieves, the Balze and the smooth grassy top of the Apennine mountains (1600 meters AMSL or above mean sea level). This is a road to take at a leisurely pace, stopping often and indulging in a bit of unplanned sightseeing especially with the numerous parish churches, lush olive groves and inviting vineyards.

On the way back we will stop in Loro Ciuffena to explore this quaint little village before returning back to the station of Florence at 5:00pm. The village is situated on the slopes of Pratomagno at 328 meters above sea level, the actual centre is of medieval origin but Loro Ciuffenna has more ancient origins, in fact in the area were found Etruscan and Roman artifacts. During the early Roman period, the Lorese territory was crossed by the Cassia Vetus (the path is still very similar to that of the Seven Bridges Road) which connected Fiesole with Arezzo. This road was then replaced by the new Cassia Adrianea, passing downstream and marginalizing Loro Ciuffenna. After the Romans, the area was occupied by the Lombards. The first mention of the name Loro is in a document dating 939. The town was later a fief of the Count Guidi and in 1293 became part of the Florentine Republic. Already in 1462 the first statutes of the community were written. Loro Ciuffenna retains a water mill still working, it’s the oldest in Tuscany. The old village is very spectacular, built on a gorge overlooking the river, and a place where you can admire an impressive network of alleys and narrow streets paved with stone.
