Private Florence: Olive Oil Tasting Tour in Tuscany
Your Tuscan adventure will begin as you make your way out of Florence and head towards the coast. During the drive, you can enjoy breathtaking views of rolling countryside, olive groves and vineyards, as we head towards the enchanting medieval town of Carmignano.
We will stop here for a cappuccino and some delicious amaretti biscuits, freshly made by local bakers. When you arrive the biscuits will still be warm and the smell (and taste) is like heaven on earth!
We’ll take a stroll past the Parish church of San Michele and San Francesco and we’ll admire the striking fresco painted by Pontormo in 1530, called ‘The Visitation.’
Then we’ll hop back in the car and continue our journey to the organic olive farm. Along the way, your guide will point out many of the original hunting lodges that belonged to the famous Medici family, who ruled over Tuscany for more than 350 years. The Medici used to own a hunting reserve in this area, known as Barco Reale, that included a 50-kilometre walled area. The idea was to preserve the game for the exclusive use of the grand dukes during their regular countryside hunts.
Upon arrival at the farm, you will be greeted by the farm owner and given a tour of the estate. If the Contessa happens to be in town, you may also have an opportunity to meet her, too.
You will visit the vinsantaia rooms, where the vin santo barrels are stored as they ferment, the ancient cellars and the olive oil room. Then we’ll enjoy a scenic walk around the biodynamic farm and learn how the olive oil is cultivated.
And then the moment you have been waiting for! We’ll make our way over to the tasting room, which boasts an original wood fire oven, to enjoy classic Tuscan bread with extra virgin olive oil produced on the estate, paired with some of our favourite Italian wines and local flavours.
If you wish to take home any souvenirs, there will be an opportunity to buy anything you want before you say your goodbyes.
On our way back to Florence, we will pass by the famous Villa Ferdinanda, known as the villa with one hundred chimneys. Your guide will drop you back at your centrally located hotel. Before you go, don’t forget to ask for tips on what else to see, do and eat during your stay in fabulous Florence!
