About this activity
You visit the splendid Palazzo Strozzi with its perfectly preserved courtyard and a little off the usual tourist trail visit the wonderful Palazzo Davanzati, a superb example of a Medieval Palace. A short walk past the “Porcellino” (little pig) market brings you to the Ponte Vecchio, Florence’s oldest bridge dating to the 1300s. From the bridge you can enjoy the views of the surrounding hills whilst your guide recounts the history of the bridge and how with the building of the Vasari Corridor the shops that line the bridge changed dramatically.
It is then on to the Piazza della Signoria where you will see the Palazzo Vecchio on one side that was once the seat of the Florentine governments and on the other the Uffizi Gallery that once housed the offices of the Grand Duke. Another detour from the usual tourist trail takes you to the oldest part of the city to see the tower houses that date from the 1300s.
From here you emerge into Piazza Doumo with its magnificent Cathedral.
The Duomo is noted for its daring design and even more challenging realization; Brunelleschi’s Dome dominates the skyline and the sun plays upon the unique green and white marble decoration. The tour ends in front of the Baptistery to see the splendid Porta del Paradiso and Giottos’s Bell Tower, an enduring example of the best of 1300s architecture.
The Duomo symbolizes all that is great abut Renaissance Florence; the perfect place to end a tour of Florence.
