Stop At: Peten, Tikal National Park Guatemala

Experience the history, culture, beauty and nature of Guatemala while visiting the incredible archeological site of Tikal, located in the Guatemalan jungle.

Upon arrival at Flores Airport, you'll be driven to Tikal National Park (Parque Nacional Tikal), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With an area of more than 341 square miles (550 sq km), this national park contains thousands of separate ruin structures scattered around, each full of fascinating history.

Visit the Mayan ruins with your expert guide and explore everything from the Central Acropolis, a maze of courtyards and small temples, to Complex Q and R, where you'll see twin pyramid complexes with altars set in front of the temples. Visit the massive Temple I, the Temple of the Grand Jaguar. Built to honor and bury King Moon Double Comb, the 144-foot (44-meter) temple is a small enclosure of three rooms with outside stairs leading to the top of the steep temple. Across the way, visit the equally beautiful Temple II, the Temple of the Masks.

Next, enjoy a delicious lunch at Tikal National Park before having some free time.

A group of 10 of us traveled to Guatemala to visit friends living there temporarily. We considered Tikal a must see, even though we only had one day to squeeze it in. Several people in our group have bad knees and were worried about being able to keep up. When I met our guide, Benny, at the airport in Flores I told him about our concerns. He arranged for an open bed truck with bench seats to take us quite a bit of the distance and let us out to see the Temples and walk the rest of the way and then a return trip back on the truck. It made all the difference. Thunderstorms were predicted for the day of our trip and I was worried it would ruin our trip, but we only had a smattering of rain drops no big deal. Benny was a great guide. Lunch was good. We all enjoyed the trip very much.

We were picked up from the hotel promptly at about 4:45 am and brought to the airport. Note the airline you'll be flying because it is totally ticketless. You will take a small plane to Flores we flew TAC air. The shuttle was waiting for us when we landed. Flores is SO different from the airport in Guatemala City. It's not frantic, it's clean and it feels safe. The tour was great. Hiking through the jungle, we saw spider monkeys and heard the howler monkeys. Our guide pointed out different fauna and the area was beautiful. There were so many ruins and it was almost overwhelming. It is a very long day. Here are some things to keep in mind. It is very humid. The trails were VERY slippery. You will do a lot of walking I think it was over 5 miles of walking per fitbit and you will climb a LOT of steps although this is optional, but I highly recommend going to the top of the pyramids for a better view. The lunch was onsite at about 2:30pm, and it was very good. You should bring a little snack and a water, as you will be doing a lot of walking between the time you land and lunch. I am a 57 year old woman in reasonable shape and by the end of the day I was exhausted. It was SO worth it, but plan on a very long day. My only complaint was the flight back from Tikal. The gate agent insisted my ticket was issued by mistake and wouldn't let me on the plane until a later flight even though my ticket clearly indicated I was suppose to be on the earlier flight. The tour company made my travel companion wait in Guatemala City until my later flight arrived. This was an infuriating end to a very nice day. The airline didn't even attempt to listen when I insisted I was part of the tour that was on the plane...If you have 16 hours in Guatemala City, I would absolutely recommend this tour.

This is a must-see trip. Wonderful experience exploring the Mayan ruins. The guide was terrific. Lunch was okay too. Make sure you bring bug spray, as prices are inflated at the location.
