About this activity
At 10am we will start our tour by meeting our local professional tour guide in front of Fat Tuesday at the Beach Place (17 S Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316). Our guide will take us for a short walk to the Main Canal where we will hop on our Water Taxi. Over the next hour or so we will learn about the famous inhabitants of Fort Lauderdale and discover just why Fort Lauderdale is known as the Venice of America. Beautiful views, stately homes, and yachts of the rich and famous are all sure to delight and amaze!
Once we arrive at Las Olas Riverfront, we will visit Briny’s Riverfront Pub and Restaurant (or similar) for a light lunch. Located by the canal, where the large Iguanas lounge and catch the Florida rays, we will have several delicious options to choose from for our lunch.
At 2pm, after we have enjoyed the sea, the canals, and a delicious lunch, the walking portion of the tour will start at the nearby Broward Center of the Performing Arts in front of the Au Rene Theater. Our guide will happily continue to share with you, insights and secrets of Fort Lauderdale that are observed only on foot. The fun and exciting walking portion of the tour will highlight the Art and Sciences district, the Sailboat Bend district, Himmarshee Area, the River Walk, and the famous and charming Las Olas Boulevard, with all her shops and delicious eateries! We will also delight in the local flora and fauna that is always on show even in the middle of the city! A real highlight will also be to see all of the different boat and yacht types along one of Fort Lauderdale’s many river canals.
We will also learn about life here before the arrival of the Europeans or the town’s creation by Americans. We will delve into the Age of Pirates in the XVII century and local British and French military activities of the XVIII century. We will together further explore the legends of the local Indian tribes before we get to the foundation of the city itself. Of interest, we will see one of the oldest buildings in Fort Lauderdale and learn about the age of Prohibition that included the presence of the infamous Al Capone himself!
Our visit will conclude with a visit of lobby and bar area of the oldest hotel in Fort Lauderdale said to be haunted. Located along one of the most scenic canals, this hotel has attracted the most famous visitors to the city for nearly century including visits by Ronald Reagan and the DuPont family.
To go back to the beach area, you may use your Water Taxi ticket which is valid all day (allowing you to explore more fun stops along the canal too), or you may catch a Sun Trolley for just $1.00 along Las Olas that will quickly take you back to the Galleria Beach Park along the A1A (beach road). You are also welcome just to hang out and enjoy the downtown and Las Olas area as there are so many things to do and see here.
