Heidelberg and Baden-Baden Tour from Frankfurt

1 day
About this activity
Leave central Frankfurt and travel south to Heidelberg in the northern Baden-Württemberg region – roughly an hour away. Straddling the River Neckar, the romantic city is framed by dense woodlands that seemingly try to hide its star attraction – Heidelberg Castle. Referred to as the 'schloss’ by locals, the castle is the epitome of a fairytale fortress with palatial Gothic-Renaissance architecture, lavish grounds and heart-stopping views.

Head inside and explore the ruins with your guide, walking through its large courtyard and along the terrace. Drink in the sweeping views, and then admire some of the castle’s artifacts, like the wine barrel that is said to be the largest in the world.

After your castle tour, travel down the hill, and then stretch your legs on a walking tour of the Old Town, seeing attractions like the Old Bridge, the 18th-century Karlstor gate and the Church of the Holy Spirit. Learn of Heidelberg’s erudite reputation as a university town, and hear about day-to-day life in the town as you walk around. Your guide will recommend some of the best local eateries and then leave you to enjoy lunch (own expense).

Board your coach and travel further south to Baden-Baden, a historical spa town in the heart of the Black Forest. Explore the town on your walking tour, passing its manicured parks and thermal bath houses. The town's headline attraction is Baden-Baden Kurhaus – home to one of the oldest casinos in Europe – so head inside for a tour.

Venture further into the Black Forest by coach to visit Lake Mummelsee, and then spend time at leisure at a town nearby. The region is famous for its production of traditional German cuckoo clocks, so perhaps browse the shops for souvenirs to take home. Then, head back to Frankfurt by coach, finishing your tour at the start point.

Coach was a minibus that was not heated at all in the middle of winter, so we all froze the entire day. There was no canal tour in Strasbourg. Because another couple had booked Heidelberg too we went there at 8pm meaning we didn't get back until 10pm. In a freezing minibus. Guide didn't give name.

Wonderful day trip. Unfortunately, the vehicle was small, old and cranky. I had to sit away from my husband throughout the journey. This was made up by including Salsburg in the day trip. Guide/driver was very knowledgable and tried hard to ensure all aboard got to see what they paid for. Overall, a very erwarding day trip.

Our guide Peter was outstanding. We had a small group of 7, he took the time to walk with us through the streets of Baden Baden and Heidelburg. He always made us stay while he went and got the mini van and save us from walking the extra mile. Outstanding service by Peter, he never rushed us and provided excellent commentary on Heidelberg, Baden-Baden and Black forest. Ask for Peter, it will be worth it.

This was quite a long day, but we knew what we were signing up for, so no grumbles there. However, the tour company office - apparently incorrectly - told the driver some clients wanted to visit Strassburg - that would have meant a VERY long day. After some discussion on the bus, it was decided to just do Heidelberg and Baden-Baden. Both H and B-B were good to visit and wander around, and the driver provided good background in each. We had a crisis when one tour member got separated from the rest of the party in B-B, but we managed to find her after searching. I was greatly impressed by the driver's professionalism in coordinating the search. The final segment in the mountains south of B-B was magic.
