Royal Castles Tour from Frankfurt: Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace

1 day
About this activity
Your full-day tour starts in the morning in central Frankfurt. Board your coach and settle in for your 4.5-hour drive south to the enchanting Bavarian town of Füssen, on the southern tip of the Romantic Road near the Austria border.

Perched on a rocky, forested hill is Neuschwanstein Castle, one of Germany’s most beloved attractions. This stunning fairy tale palace rises steeply above the village of Hohenschwangau, looming over the Alpine foothills. A snapshot of Neuschwanstein from afar explains why this royal castle was used as the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

Bypass the long entrance lines and enter the castle for your walking tour. Learn about the life and reign of the shy and reclusive King Ludwig II, as you admire the distinctive Neo-Gothic Revival architecture and ornate interior, adorned with precious furnishings and paintings from the late 1800s. After your tour, spend time strolling around the gardens, browsing for souvenirs and taking photos against the breathtaking backdrop of the Bavarian mountains.

Continue by coach to Linderhof Palace, roughly an hour away. The smallest of King Ludwig II’s three palaces, Linderhof was inspired by the king’s visits to the Palace of Versailles in France. On a walking tour, admire Linderhof's grand architecture and opulent décor, noticing the Neo-Rococo style that reflects the king’s fascination with the ancien régime, a French political system that was in place before the French Revolution. Head outside to wander the lovely ornamental gardens, reminiscent of the Versailles Gardens.

At the end of the day, relax on your journey back to Frankfurt where your tour finishes.

The trip is a very long one and the van used to transport the tourists was not comfortable for this trip. It provided no arm or leg rests. The stops were few and made at gas stations along the way that offered almost exclusively junk food the company only provided one sandwich and one bottle of water for this extra long day trip The tour company made us pay Euro 1.80 extra bus fare to take us up to the Neuschwanstein castle. I thought this was really cheap on their part, especially after the amount of money each tourist paid to get on this excursion.
