A visit to Franschhoek is not complete without a photo being taken under the President Nelson Mandela staue at the prison where he spent his last days before the “Walked to Freedom”. The Mandela statue located in front of the prison commemorates this special part of South African history.

The village of Pniel and the Werf with its historical monuments. has a very interesting link to the days of slavery and the religious history of the beautiful Dwarsrivier

The Huguenot Memorial Museum & Monument is one of the most prominent features of Franschhoek. The statue is dedicated to the French Huguenots and the museum reflects the history and influences of their presence in the valley.

In any community one of the most important services provided by the dedicated people of the townships are the Crèche. Without these facilities many people would have great difficulty in going out to work. All of them cater for between 20 to 40 children. The people who run these crèche are trained in pre-school education and put in a great deal of effort to make these places a happy experience for the children. These places will leave an impression in your mind never to be forgotten.

A number of vineyards have been reorganised into trusts for which the employees are beneficiaries. Effectively the employees are “owners” benefiting from the profits of the vineyard. The wine estate offers a variety of guided farm experiences. Led primarily by farm residents, the tours offer rare personal insight into the vineyards, farm workers’ lives, and the cultural and musical heritage of the surrounding Cape Winelands. The beautiful Franschhoek wine farm estate also features a museum that explores the slave heritage of the area.
