About this activity
Over the millennia, sand drifting from mainland Australia formed Fraser Island. Known as K’Gari—paradise—in the local Aboriginal language, the island boasts an incredibly diverse landscape with sandy beaches, giant sand dunes, lush rainforest and more than 100 lakes.

Your Fraser Island hiking experience includes camping equipment such as a tent, hiking backpack and cooking gear, plus maps, itineraries, permits, and return 4WD and barge transfers that take you from Hervey Bay to the starting point on Fraser Island for the self-guided hike. You will receive a full safety briefing and information about what to expect on your Fraser Island hiking adventure. All you need to bring is your personal gear and food for your trip. The hiking trails call for a moderate level of fitness, so come prepared.

Day 1: Hervey Bay to Fraser Island
Your hiking adventure commences with a courtesy pick up from you accommodation, followed by a full safety briefing at our office in Urangan, Hervey Bay.

After being briefed on what to expect, and checking you have all the required equipment, you will be transported by 4WD to the River Heads barge where you take the 1015am barge to Wanggoolba Creek to start your walk. See the crystal clear Wanggoolba Creek , Basin Lake and camp exclusively at Lake McKenzie hikers camp under the stars, enjoy the peace of the lake.

Overnight: camping at Lake McKenzie

Day 2: Fraser Island to Hervey Bay
Wake up to a spectacular sunrise at the lake. After breakfast, pack up your gear and take a 13km hike out via Mckenzie Jetty to Kingfisher Bay Resort. You might want to treat yourself to a drink or hot meal at the resort to celebrate your trek. Meet your 4wd transfer at 4:30pm for a 5:00pm barge departure, keeping an eye out for dolphins, dugongs and other marine life during the crossing. Back on the mainland, your driver meets you and returns you to Hervey Bay where your tour ends.

  • Camping equipment including 70L backpack, all camping and cooking equipment needed, camp permits, maps, itineraries.
  • Barge transfers, and return vehicle transfers to Fraser Island.
  • Sleeping bags and rain jackets can be hired – additional $10 per item.
Not included
  • Food and drinks - consumables are not provided.
  • Bring your own sleeping bag / rain jacket or hire one on the morning for $10 each.
  • This is a self guided hiking trip, you will not have a guide with you on the hike.
  • This is not a driving tour and driving of the 4WD is not permitted by hikers.

  • Please wear closed-toe shoes suitable for walking
  • An average level of fitness is required
  • The local operator will require a credit card bond of AU$150 for hiking equipment supplied
  • This is a self guided hiking adventure, you will not have a guide and there will not be an opportunity to drive the 4WD
