About this activity
You’ll get a lovely overview of Freeport while you’re in port with this half-day shore excursion. The most vibrant city on Grand Bahama Island is yours to explore, from high-end homes owned by famous names like Count Basie to the international bazaar, where you can shop for souvenirs.

You’ll drive by Millionaire's Row, Grand Bahama's version of Beverly Hills. Then visit a conch vendor and find out how to make conch salad before traveling to Freeport's open-air fruit market.

You’ll travel west to see the picturesque harbor and visit a local liquor shop where you can purchase duty-free rum and more. You’ll also admire the flora, waterfalls, strolling pathways and chapel of the Garden of Groves.

We took the one-day trip to and from Ft. Lauderdale and Freeport. I think it was worth it as we definitely got a good understanding of what was on the island if we wanted to go back and spend more time. On the Balearia ferry from Ft. Lauderdale, passengers can purchase a round-trip bus ticket to and from the city center once they are on the boat for something like $11 however this would not take us to the different places we were able to see on our viatour half-day excursion. We traveled during the off-season so we had the van and the driver all to ourselves and thus more liberty to spend as much or as little time as we wanted at the different stops. Our driver picked us up right at the port where our ferry came in, near where the cruise liners dock. There are also other options once passengers arrive at the port with cheap shuttles, etc., however they do not cover all the different places you can see with the viatour option. I enjoyed it and would recommend viatour to anyone on a day trip to Freeport.

We got off to a rough start when we left the ship to meet the driver to pick us up and were told by employees of the company who were there for another tour that we were supposed to be there at 8 but I was told 8:45 am on the phone the day before. They did remedy the issue quickly and we were picked up by a shuttle bus who took us to rendezvous with our group (they were still in the middle of picking up people from different hotels so we didn't miss anything). Our tour guide/drive was Snake and he was full of information about the island and places we were going. The gardens were beautiful and the tour there very interesting. We got dumped on by rain when we first arrived but that is obviously not in anyone's control. To those who are cruising, there are two options, a morning and an afternoon tour. The tour took longer than it said so I am glad we booked for the morning as we may not have made it back to the ship in time had we taken the afternoon tour. People on island time are not as concerned about timetables.
