Day 1: Negombo

Stop At: Negombo Fish Market, Negombo Sri Lanka
Famous fish market Lellama, serving over 100,000 people in the area, is located in Negombo on the west coast of Sri Lanka. This is the second largest fish market on the island. Negombo is on most stops for visitors to Sri Lanka as it is the closest major city to the international airport. This is definitely a worthwhile visit. It’s free, it’s an exciting environment and you will meet many friendly, curious Sri Lankans. Above all it’s a truly authentic non-touristy experience. Arrive early, no later than 6:30 to see the most action. The auctions start as early as 3am.

Stop At: Dutch Fort, Esplanade Road, Negombo 22100 Sri Lanka
Located close to the oceanfront near the lagoon mouth of Negombo lies the ruins of an ancient building that is over 300 years old. This was once a fort that was used as a stronghold by the early colonizers. What remain of the original building are an archway and a bell tower and the rest of the complex has been made into a prison.

Stop At: Dutch Canal, Custom House Road, Negombo 22100 Sri Lanka
Hamilton Canal also known as the Dutch Hamilton Canal running from the Kelani river to the southern edge of Negombo lagoon. Earlier this waterway was used to transport pearls, spices & cinnamon to Colombo. A Boat trip along this canal & lagoon is a perfect menu for tourists who want a little adventure & at the same time experience the beauty & history of Sri Lanka.

Stop At: Angurukaramulla Temple, Temple road, Negombo 22100 Sri Lanka
The Angurukaramulla Temple is a place of Buddhist and Hindu worhsip which is a short route inland from the city of Negombo. The temple is well known for its Buddha statue standing 6 metres high. As you enter this famed site you will see the gigantic sculpture of a dragon at the base of the entrance, as if to shield the temple from evil spirits. Right from the entrance the temple portrays a unique style. The ancient murals and the historic paintings are also much talked about elements of this attraction. As you exit and enter the premises your eyes would not fail to notice the collection of Buddha statues gifted by devotees.

Stop At: Negombo Beach, Negombo Sri Lanka
Negombo is the perfect location for a beach holiday just before you set off to explore the rest of Sri Lanka or just before the end of your holiday in Sri Lanka. with a range of beach activities, such as kite surfing, and an active nightlife, there is always something to do in Negombo.

Day 2: Negombo - Hikkaduwa - Galle

Stop At: Hikkaduwa Beach, Hikkaduwa 80240 Sri Lanka
The beach of Hikkaduwa is situated 98 km from Colombo towards the south of Sri Lanka. The coral sanctuary found along the coast of Hikkaduwa is a large shallow body of water enclosed by a reef, decorated with layers of multi coloured corals, and is home to countless numbers of vibrantly coloured fish. Off the beach there is a collection of small islets surrounded by beautiful coral formations. Many species of fish and large turtles are found here. There are more than four different shipwrecks for diving enthusiasts to explore along with dive shops offering PADI courses and equipment.

Stop At: Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, 13A Galle Road, Kosgoda 80570 Sri Lanka
Kosgoda is the one of the very few hatcheries where all the five species in the country make their nests. They are the Olive Ridleys, Leatherbacks, Green Turtles, Loggerheads and Hawksbills. If you visit this little haven for even littler, delicate creatures, speak to the staff and release some babies into the ocean. The innocent souls come flapping back the first two-three times the wave hits them. But, after that they flap into their homes; the ocean, with so much joy, it fills up your heart too.

Stop At: Madu River, Nilwala River Safari, Bridge View, Custom Road, Balapitiya , Sri Lanka, Balapitiya 80550 Sri Lanka
The Madu Ganga boat ride takes you through the estuary of the river which comprises of dense mangrove forests and 64 islands. A variety of birdlife can be seen which include several species of Herons, Bitterns, Kingfishers, Cormorants and birds of prey along with troops of Toque Macaques and Bengal Water Monitors where fully grown specimens can get to over 6 feet in length. One of the islands has a Buddhist monastery which is decorated with some sculptures and art work, the highlight being a 150 year old book made of palm leaves. You can see the local villagers extract cinnamon oil from the trees. If traveling in the early evening, you may also see the prawn fishermen at work in their canoes lighting lanterns in order to attract the shellfish towards their traps. The duration of the boat safari is around 2 hours.

Day 3: Galle - Mirissa

Stop At: Galle Fort, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
The city of Galle plays an important role in Sri Lankan history, specially when considering about the international relationships during the historical times. Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic Galle Fort is filled with several exotic boutiques and exquisite restaurants that draw visitors from the world over a charm it has held for centuries, first housing the Portuguese, and then the Dutch, who built the fort back in the 17th century to the iconic landmark it is today.

Stop At: Galle National Museum, Church St, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
The National Museum of Galle (Galle National Museum) is one of the oldest national museums of Sri Lanka. It is located in the oldest remaining Dutch building in the Galle fort, Galle, a single storey colonnaded Dutch building built in 1656 as the commissariat store for the Dutch garrison at the fort. The museum houses a limited collection of exhibits from the Portuguese, Dutch and British periods. It has three main galleries, the first contains collections relating to the area’s cottage industries, primarily turtle shell jewellery manufacturing, Beeralu lace weaving and traditional wooden mask carvings.

Stop At: Galle Fort Lighthouse, Rampart Street Galle Fort, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
The Galle Lighthouse, or Pointe de Galle Light as it was also known, was the very first light station to be built in Sri Lanka. Dating back to 1848, the lighthouse was built by the British to ensure the safe arrival of their ships at the Galle harbor. This original structure stood 24.5 m tall (80 feet) and was located at a site approximately 100 feet from the current lighthouse.

Day 4: Mirissa - Yala - Negombo

Stop At: Mirissa Whale Watching No 1, Harbour Road, Mirissa 81740, Sri Lanka
Mirissa is one of the best places in the world for whale watching, especially for the largest marine mammal "Blue Whales".Whale and Dolphin watching is an easy sport that you can take up during the months of December to April. Pods of Dolphins can be seen accompanying boats frequently during the said months. Blue and Sperm Whales in large numbers frequent the coastline of Sri Lanka during this period and can be viewed near Mirissa beach.

Stop At: Yala National Park, Sri Lanka
Yala National Park is the most popular wildlife destination in Sri Lanka because of the high chance of encounter and variety of animals. Its diversity of bird, mammal and reptile life is unrivaled in the country and there are particularly high densities of its two keystone species: elephants and leopards. Current estimates suggest there are around 70 leopards and, as the apex predator in the park, they’re top cat here so less fearful than in countries like Africa where lions rule the roost. Take a jeep safari through the park which will last for approximately 4 hours.
