My wife and I have traveled extensively in Europe, the Mediterranean, the US, and the Virgin Islands. I don’t normally write reviews, but I am impressed enough with this company that I wanted to share it with other travelers. Reading up on Egypt, we braced ourselves for what bloggers seemed to relentlessly call a “tout” experience. We were concerned that any travel guide we booked would detract from, rather than enhance, our time in Egypt and so decided to “go it alone”. After a couple of days of becoming acclimated, we realized there was so much more to see and learn than we could accomplish on our own. To get the context, history and the incredible stories of Egypt that we could feel we were missing out on, we booked this trip through Viator. We were so happy with each day, that each day we booked another day with our guide. We ended up spending three days together. We were lucky he was available, and our schedule was flexible. We were not on a schedule, so we booked the days he had open. For a private tour, they provided an excellent car with air conditioning (don’t assume your car in Egypt will have good brakes, air conditioning, or other things we take for granted), a professional well-mannered driver that did an incredible job of making us feel safe in the worst of traffic conditions, and a guide that is an Egyptologist with 26 years of experience – his name is Said and he spoke excellent English (he said he speaks Spanish and Portuguese better, but I found everything understandable and enjoyed his Egyptian accent). They picked us up on time at our hotel, did not rush us through anything, were pleasant when traffic or circumstance caused the tour to run late, and scheduled us to avoid Mid-day Prayers in our visits to Mosques, even though it added an extra hour of driving time because of traffic patterns and city layout. They provided lunch at nice restaurants with good food, water and snacks in the car, and our guide was happy to answer questions about history, the area we were driving through, and modern Egyptian life. They did all of this for a great price. Be sure to ask, but the price of our tours included the entrance fees to all the areas we visited, parking passes for the car, lunch, the guide, the driver, and the snacks and water. If there were extra tickets available to purchase for additional things to do in an area, our guide explained the option and the cost of the tickets and let us choose. If your guide gives you an option for an activity (such as taking a cart, horse, or camel at the Giza Pyramids), do be aware that there is a charge that you negotiate with the provider of the activity. If you wish, you can ask your guide ahead of time to suggest a price, but I preferred to figure it out as part of my experience. If your guide asks if you wish to go to a perfume, papyrus, or jewelry store, or he recommends a cart vendor, be aware that you will have a personal discussion with a salesperson that will explain the unique Egyptian way of making these things and will ask you to buy something. Your guide will step away for a time while the salesman works with you. Remember, just because it is different, does not mean it is wrong. I admired their salesmanship and did not feel overly pressured. I knew if I was uncomfortable, I could ask for Said. I sat back and enjoyed their presentation. I like to bargain but like to think I know when I am outclassed. By picking only the cheapest thing, or by saying I don’t think I want to buy today (takes about three times), the salesperson dropped their price on an up sale. We made some purchases and are very happy with them. At the Papyrus shop, Said stepped away during the presentation and let the salesman show us around. I was not sure what was a good value - hey, I’m from California, what do I know about Papyrus? After the guide showed us around, Said explained to us that much of the so-called papyrus in the tourist areas are not even papyrus. The shop he brought us to, like the other shops we visited did provide the genuine product – no fakes or knock-offs. Before he became a guide 26 years ago, he worked in Papyrus and explained some of the differences in artists and content. He then offered to negotiate a price for me if I wanted anything. He did negotiate a much better price for me, and he checked to make sure everything I ordered was placed in the tube for transport (luckily, as one had been missed). Does Said or the agency make a commission when we stop at these shops? Frankly, it is none of my business, so I didn’t ask and don’t care. Again, I found our shopping experiences, pleasant, charming, and educational. Said’s knowledge is extensive, he stays actively informed in the field of Egyptology and Archaeology. I would describe him as pleasant, well informed, someone who loves to tell a story not just the facts, who gives the beliefs and interpretations as well as what is known, generous (he gave money to those who he met that were sick or poor), and honest. Two of the days I gave him cash ahead of time for our tours, and I had no concerns. Even with decades of traveling, we had some concerns about visiting Egypt, and I wanted to give others the benefit of our experience. I found it pleasant and the people enjoyable. Remember to tip your guides to your level of enjoyment and ability. They never asked for a tip or made any indication they expected one. They were just as pleasant as we parted when I tipped them 10% as when I tipped them 30%. Generous payment for helping us create good memories only adds to my positive reflections on my trip.
