The 3 great peaks of Sierra Nevada

5 days
About this activity
Day 1: The adventure begins

Welcome to Andalusia. You start your adventure in the city of Malaga. Dating back 2,800 years, it’s one of the oldest cities in the world - and it is currently enjoying an artistic revival. Once you transfer from the airport (we’ll arrange this with you), you’ll meet the group at your accommodation for the evening, and depending on the time of arrival, you’ll have the chance to get out and see a little of this lively, exciting city.

Day 2: Trekking through The Alpujarras

After a short ride from Malaga, you’ll start the day’s trek in Trevélez or Capileira. They’re both beautiful settlement of whitewashed buildings in the traditional Alpujarras style. Trevélez is one of Europe’s highest towns above sea level (1,486 metres), famous for the quality of its air-cured hams - and Capileira is the highest village accessible by road in the Sierra Nevada. The day’s walk will take you across these green, fertile hills, skirting natural springs and enjoying stunning views of the Andalusian landscape below.

You’ll finish your walk at the Poqueira Refuge, 2,500 metres high, tucked under Mulhacén, the highest peak in Spain - and your destination the next day.

Day 3: Climbing to the roof of Spain

You’ll start the day early and climb the slopes of Mulhacén, Spain’s highest mountain at 3.482 m above sea level, before descending through Siete Lagunas, a region of pastures and lakes spreading out at the base of Mulhacén, with a view of Alcazaba (this is the nearest we’ll get, as the mountain is difficult to reach in a round trip from our mountain hut).

Once you’ve seen all the sights, you’ll make our way back to the Poqueira Refuge, where you’ll be spending your second night.

Day 4: The view from Veleta

Today you climb Veleta, the second highest peak in the Sierra Nevada (3,396 metres above sea level) and, with its famous ‘frozen wave’ shape, the most iconic. From the imposingly rugged summit, you’ll look across over the whole mountain range (on a clear day Granada is visible in the distance), and down upon the highest paved road in Europe, the Pico de Veleta, connecting with the Sierra Nevada Ski Station.

After a long day of climbing you’ll get to your lodge and collapse gratefully for the night!

Day 5: ....and Home

Barring a little opportunistic sightseeing in Malaga, you’re done! We’ll be arranging for transfers to Malaga airport for your flight home - but depending on your time of flight, you could visit the city’s port, the shopping precinct, the cathedral, Gibralfaro Castle or the Alcazaba, and take a last meal in Andalusia with some of the best seafood you’ll find in Spain.

See you again soon!
