Because the church is masonry by granite, it is commonly known as "stone chamber".After the Second Opium War, the French Government, under the , confiscated the Catholic Church in Guangzhou under the pretext of the Qing court, threatened the Qing government with compensation for damages, and forced the official government to rent out the former governor of Guangdong and Guangxi to build the church. It was built in 1863 and completed in 1888.
