We will visit one of the most beautiful tourist sites in the department of Huehuetenango, the Mirador Juan Diéguez Olaverri, named after a poet.
The Mirador Juan Diéguez Olaverri is located in the department of Chiantla, Huehuetenango. This site stands out as one of the first points of tourist interest for those who visit the beautiful Sierra de los Cuchumatanes.
The viewpoint is located in one of the highest places in Guatemala, offering breathtaking views of the region. Among the characteristics of the landscape that attracts the attention of tourists are the volcanoes Tacaná, Tajumulco and Santa María.
Specifically, visitors can travel 12 kilometers uphill to Todos Santos Cuchumatán from Chiantla. The highest point of elevation is located at 3,300 meters above sea level.
At its peak, tourists can find 9 monuments that hold the verses of a poem written by the original poet of Huehuetenango, Juan Diéguez Olaverri. In fact, it is in his honor that the viewpoint received that name.
Then we will visit the Archaeological Site of Zaculeu; It was the capital of the Mam kingdom and flourished during the Classic period. It is located a few minutes from the departmental capital of Huehuetenango, and with relative proximity to the border with Mexico.
Historical reviews reveal that the region was called Memejuyú, whose meaning is "Valley of the Old Ones". The style of the constructions varies from the stereotype found in Petén cities such as Tikal or Uaxactún although the pyramidal stylization and staircases remain.
