About this activity
Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel in Guilin and drive you to Longsheng County, two hours northwest of Guilin. Begin your private tour by visiting the villages of the Zhuang and Yao people, two of the ethnic minority groups officially recognized in China. Your guide will provide comprehensive information about the culture and traditions of the Zhuang and Yao. See their unique and colorful clothing; listen to the melodious folk music; watch the playful dances; and observe the women weaving and embroidering. Enjoy a local lunch before traveling to the Longji Rice Terrace Fields.

Climb up to the summit of the Longji Rice Terraces at an elevation of 2,886 feet (880 meters). A half-hour hike up offers an amazing panoramic vista of this incredible feat of farm engineering. The terraced fields were first built in the Yuan Dynasty, when the Zhuang people were forced to flee to the mountains. In order to continue farming on the mountains, the Zhuang people turned the mountains into farmland by creating terraced fields where the farmers could grow rice.

From the peak, the terraced rice fields resemble the backbone of a dragon twisting and turning into the distance. The terraces divide the mountain into multiple layers. Tiers of water glisten in the sun during the spring; lush green rice shoots appear in the summer; layers of golden rice flourish in the fall; and layers of snow cover the terraces in the winter.

Our guide, John, was really good. It was a rainy and foggy day, unfortunately, and we didn't have a good view of the terraces. It was still nice to have seen a glimpse of it. Hike up is 45 mins, not too hard. Had a nice local lunch in a village restaurant on the hike down.

The tour was really beautiful. It is a fairly long drive through the countryside. But this way you can have a look at the non-touristy life in China. At the beginning of the drive our guide provided us with the information about Guilin and the nature and people we were about to see. At the park itself there was only one stop at a village of one minority people. We did not stop at the Yao village and did not see the dancing and music. But for us this wasn't a problem. On the hike up to the view point our guide paid close attention to our abilities and stopped for a break when we needed it it's not easy climbing in the heat and humidity. She also let two of us head further up while she waited at the first viewpoint with the those not wanting to climb further. The more private talk there was very enjoyable. After the visit of the rice fields we had the option of driving to some factories or shops. I liked the fact that she wasn't aggressive of getting us there. We weren't interested and so she just had us brought back to the hotel. So all in all it is a long drive for a shortish hike up the mountain to some marvelous views. Well worth it.

This tour was a major highlight of our trip. Absolutely go to the rice terraces. The views are stunning and there is a lot of culture to be seen. Lily iwas our tour guide and she was a wealth of knowledge and spoke great English. Lunch was extremely tasty at a local cafe. Wear good shoes!

Went to Ancient Chuang village, (open to tourism for 1yr vs Ping'an village, which opened 10 yrs ago). Was the most peaceful and quiet part of our China trip. Took 2h 15m to drive each way from our hotel (Guilin Bravo) and our guide Ocsar, was very knowledgeable. Great lunch, fresh bamboo, bamboo rice!
