Visit: St Nikolai Memorial, Willy-Brandt-Str. 60, 20457 Hamburg Germany

St. Nikolai Memorial is Hamburg’s most important memorial dealing with the war and its dictatorship during 1933-1945. The original main church was destroyed in the air raids on Hamburg in 1943. In the church ruins a museum reminds us of the disastrous air war over Europe. It questions the impact of war in former as well as in present times and deals with aspects of the memories of the victims of World War II. A glass elevator takes visitors up the fifth highest church tower in the world. A viewing platform at 76 metres overlooks the harbour, the Alster lakes and Hamburg’s city centre. Historical photos of past destruction add up to the impressions. Our program offers discussions in current events, supports research on German history and promotes international peace movements/ peace and understanding of nations.

Really disappointed with the 2 day city pass. We had issues trying to access the hop on bus on our first morning as the ticket must be collected from the dock area which is in the small print but trying to find out how to get there was a challenge and then the bus is not red as stated but is blue and yellow! When we asked for English commentary the guide was very sarcastic and proceeded to talk in a Downton Abbey accent so we decided to get off the bus in the hope we would have a better luck the following day as we had thought the hop on hop off bus would be valid for both days but this was not the case so we only actually used this part of the pass for an hour. We did use the pass for local transport but with limited German this really is difficult we went to 3 different information offices to get advice on the pass and not one was able to assist us. We visited St Michael's Church but the voucher doesn't include entrance to the crypt. The HVC tour is just a small museum tour stadium tour is in German and lasts 90mins and is an extra 6E We arrived at the Dungeons just after 10am to be told we were to late to join the only English speaking tour of the day but the staff were really friendly and were able to give us directions. If the boat cruise is in German you may as well get the free boat around the port which we did. Overall we were so disappointed with the pass it didn't feel like good value at all to us bearing in mind how cheap public transport is in Hamburg. Do not buy!
