About this activity
After hotel pickup, head to the restaurant where your night festivities begin with a welcome ceremony in the pergola. Listen to live music, enjoy a tropical cocktail and observe the ritual of

takona (painted faces). You can even have your face marked with the traditional kiea pigments.

Then gather around a pit for the

umu pae presentation to learn about the Rapa Nui tradition of cooking food on top of hot volcanic stones. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about the process, which includes wrapping the goods in banana leaves and placing them go in the ground to cook for several hours. While the meat cools, work up an appetite as you try out traditional dance steps with members of a performance group.

For dinner, the umu pae–style menu features dishes prepared earlier that day. You can expect some sort of meat — chicken, pork ribs, sausage and fish — plus seasonal vegetables like sweet potato, squash, carrots and taro. Take bites of the succulent meats and vegetables that have simmered for hours. Regular sides include rice, salads, sauces, bread and dessert.

Once you're full, head to the ballroom for a spellbinding folkloric extravaganza that brings Rapa Nui history and legends to life. In between the impressive dancing and traditional chants of ‘Hoko,’ ‘Moai’ and ‘Tanata Manu,’ the chieftain explains what you see.

After the performance, you’ll be taken back to your hotel.

My husband and I purchased this dinner and show packeage for our first night on Rapa Nui. It was a wonderful introduction to the island's culture. We thoroughly enjoyed it!! The food was good and plentiful. No regrets!!

Overall, the performance was well-done, the food was good and plentiful, the service was excellent. Was glad that the explanations were in both Spanish and English as well as some Rapa Nui. Downsides were that the dinner was rather rushed...felt as if we stood in line for the buffet longer than we had time to eat before being hustled into the performance. The driver who picked us up at the hotel, drove way too fast and erratically for the small streets he, obviously, was in a big hurry to arrive, but was unsafe in his driving. And, lastly, we had no choice other than red/white wine of drinks...no bar where we could order drinks of our own choosing offering beer options, something simple other than pisco sours, even if the cost was extra, would have been preferable.

This activity was listed as being in English. Unfortunately, my husband and I were the only English speaking amongst 70-80 Spanish speaking; thus very little was in English. A few lines were spoken in English, and I perceived there was a much more detailed explanation in Spanish. No instructions for seating were given in English. At the end of the show, we got back on the same van, with the same driver who had brought us; assuming it was taking us back to the hotel. After everyone else was taken to their hotels, the driver was very angry at us, yelling at us in Spanish. It seemed that he had no plans to take us back (our hotel was not listed on his sheet-he kept pointing to his list). He eventually did take us back, but drove very fast. The food was good and clearly a lot of prep work was done with a minimal staff. The Show itself was similar in content to other Polynesian shows seen elsewhere. The driver yelling at us and lack of English speaking ruined the experience for us.
