About this activity
Day1:
Depart from Hangzhou and arrive in Pujiang at noon. While on the road, our guide will take some time to explain a few cautions and points of culture that you’ll need to know before you can step down onto the streets of this ancient township and become part of the festival atmosphere of the dragon bench tradition.
Here, on any day of the first Lunar Month, you’ll feel the excitement of New Year’s flowing from houses and ancestral halls decked in colored ornaments.
As dusk falls and the final touches are put in place there’s a moment of silence. Three gong strikes radiate throughout the village and it begins! Hundreds upon thousands of firecrackers crackle and pop and the rhythm of upbeat drums surge – find a good spot, because the main event is starts now!
Suddenly bench dragons of different lengths start to merge into the town square, forming circle upon circle. The tail and body follow after the dragon head, circling around and around. Performers then hold benches overhead and imitate the dragon’s flight. They move faster and faster, the circles getting tighter and tighter until in the end, people are almost racing. It gets really exciting!
When the events have reached their end and things start to calm down we’ll move off and check-in for the night at hotel.
Day 2:
Day two we get an early start, departing for the “Village of Noodles”- Panzhoujia Village. Arriving after about an hour’s ride we see it.
Perhaps the noodliest place on earth, noodles hang throughout the village because just about everyone here is in the business of making and drying this particular type of noodle – hence the noodley curtains about the place.
As noon arrives you’ll be let loose into the village. Try an iconic bowl of the local “single-string noodle”。Rest up, then we’re off to Zhaikou.
In Zhaikou Village, from the 11th to 15th of the first Lunar month, glowing fish lanterns emerge and swim the streets for the Lantern Festival.
Made with five to ten segments and more ornate than those of other areas, Zhaikou made lanterns into an artform – they are now a registered item of county-level intangible cultural heritage.
Vivid and lively, the lantern come to life and swim in the evening air. Get into it, get a few fish-related blessings*, then when it all wraps up we head back to the county city for a night’s rest.
*Translation Note: Among the commonest of New Year’s blessings is “Nian Nian You Yu”- the ‘Yu’ meaning ‘abundance/wealth’but sharing pronunciation with the Chinese for ‘fish’
Day 3:
Setting out in the morning on day three, we’ll stroll about the villages seeing the local dragon dances. There’ll be Niangao ‘year-cake’pummeling, prayer rounds and other Spring Festival customs. Find what you like and join in to make the experience memorable.
In the afternoon, when we’re ready, we go back to Hangzhou.
