Itinerary

Stop At: Perfume Pagoda, Huong Son My Duc, Hanoi 100000 Vietnam

This pagoda is a vast complex of Buddhist temples and shrines built into the Limestone Mountains. It is the site of a religious festival which draws large numbers of pilgrims from across Vietnam. The many Pagodas that make up Perfume Pagoda are spread out among the limestone hills and tropical forests in the area of Huong Mountain.

We will depart from Ha Noi at 8:00 am for 2-hour drive through the picturesque countryside followed by a 1.5-hour boat trip along the scenic Yen Stream to Perfume Pagoda. Another boat will take us about an hour from Thien Tru Harbor. From there, we will take a cable car to the spectacular Huong Tich Cave on the top of the mountain. At Huong Tich there are statues of Deities, but many pilgrims travel there to receive blessings from the stalactites and stalagmites, many of which are named and have special purposes. The “golden tree” and the “silver tree” stalactites are considered as especially lucky. On the way back, visit Giai Oan Spring and Tuyet Son Pagoda. We will have lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to Ha Noi.

Duration: 3 hours

A very full but fascinating day tour from Hanoi. Yes there were some discomforts about the tour but for us the whole day was entirely worthwhile and no hesitation to give 5 star rating. Out tour guide Xiang and driver picked us up on time at our Hanoi hotel. Xiang made the day entirely enjoyable with his constant smiles and laughter. His English was very good and we rarely had issues communicating. Xiang gave us loads of interesting details about all our sights, Vietnam, the economy, politics, culture and daily lives. The drive to and from was long, about 2 hours each way but there is so much to see along the way from the car window. We stopped for morning vietnameses coffee and toilet stop about half way. The sampan boat ride was quite uncomfortable but all the tours use the same type of boats. We bought small towels to sit on the hard metal seats. We found our long legs didn't quite fit the space. We were offered one umbrella between us but I think one umbrella per person is better as the boat ride is one hour in the hot sun. Take some extra water to drink and hand fans as the air was still and very humid. Beware of all the opportunities to get sold souvenirs, the main drawback of going to popular tourist destinations in Vietnam. There are many stone stairs to climb so very good walking shoes are essential. Broad brim hats, light cotton long sleeve clothing, a camera, small backpack, small towel, hand sanitiser, an open mind and cash for drinks and tips are essential too. The cable car was a great relief from the walking and gave us a good birds eye view of the area. The cave in which the shrine is situated is down many old stone stairs as well. We stayed for quite a while as many locals were visiting to offer altar gifts and pay homage, a number of nuns were also doing chanting and mantras. The cave is spectacular and so full of history. We found it mesmerising. Overall this trip was worth it and Xiang was an absolute gem of a guide.

Picked up on time from our hotel for trip to the river. Guide Ms Dung Nguyen was very pleasant and informative. Boat ride up the river to the Pagoda was very relaxing. Cable car ride was best way to get to the top but there was still a bit of walking around the site. Worth doing if you have the time.
