About this activity
Meet your guide in the Hoan Kiem district in the evening to start your stroll through the districts of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, each known for their historic trades including blacksmiths, silver shops, paper shops, headstone makers, silk traders, and jewelers. Along the perimeter of the market, dozens of street hawkers sell a staggering variety of products from live seafood to exotic fruits and spices.

Your English-speaking expert local guide will give you an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular northern dishes. Eat as you go, trying seasonal fruits and sampling a tasty French-inspired snack from a street cart. Walking through the maze of bustling streets that make up Hanoi’s Old Quarter will tempt your taste-buds with the famed Hanoi dishes such as Bun Cha Ta, Banh Cuon at a local eatery. Watch in awe as the skilled chefs demonstrate for you how this tasty dish is put together.

Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago.

The next two snack stops are at outdoor barbecue stalls. Sit down with the locals and sample various meats, vegetables, and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavor. It’s then time for dessert as you venture down a small alley to join in the local tradition of feasting on fresh fruit served in a cup and smothered with crushed iced and condensed milk. This specialty is one not to be missed.

Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets, a hidden street food restaurant, to taste some of the top street foods in Hanoi such as Banh my Hanoi, Vietnamese rice wine and the famous egg coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow street inside the old quarter of Hanoi. Or, if coffee is not your style, a cold beer awaits.

At the end of the trip you are free to continue exploring the area or your guide will assist you with directions, or a taxi back to your hotel (at own expense).

There were 15 people in our group which I felt was too many. The guide was quite personable but the tour seemed disorganised. The 1st course was Bahn Mi, this is the Vietnamese bread roll, it was very good. The next dish was chicken noodle soup, it was OK but I had better a better flavoured soup in a roadside street stall. The 3rd dish was meant to be a bbq pork rolled in rice paper. Unfortunately the restaurant providing this dish had run out of food and were having a family meal, so we did not have this dish. Next was tropical fruit in coconut milk, well I could get most of that fruit in any country so a bit of a fail. The final dish was egg coffee. The café that was meant to serve us was too busy so we went to another one nearby. We had had egg coffee at another place the previous day but this coffee was far superior and we wanted to go back there again. So 2 good dishes and 2 average dishes out of 5 with 1 no show. Still waiting for the group photo that was meant to be emailed to us.

Not too bad. Mia was friendly, but could not seem to manage the pace or let it slow down enough for my mother in law a senior citizen to catch up. Some food was good, some was not, and the food we tried was not the same food listed in the Viator website, so they the tour company must have made some changes on their own. Mia was helpful though and got us a Grab car at the end to get back to the hotel. Overall ok, nothing to shout about I'd say.

The food tour was excellent. Mia, our tour guide, made us try different types of food, which were all good. I would recommend this if you want to experience the walking tour of Hanoi Old Quarter.

Probably a good tour for first timers to Hanoi and Vietnam. Our tour guide, mike, was informative and pleasant.

Once again a great tour. Michael our guide was very good and took us to some great restaurants where we tried their food in the streets. It was a bit sad that we had only arrived that day and were pretty tired and having trouble with the heat so finished early at our request which was great to be able to do on a small group tour. We had more food than we could cope with even finishing early. We even did some cooking ourselves. All in all a great way to see the city and meet the locals.
