Old quarter has 36 streets named as Shoes Street, Silver street, Paper street...It is famous for the ancient as well as secret, so unique. If you wonder why called "Old", you might be a big surprise should you know that Hanoi's Old Quarter came into being at the time King Ly Thai To selected Thang Long as the country’s capital in 1010, that is, the streets have a nearly 1,000-year old history and became crowded & lively in 15th century. What makes them unique is that many of them remain in their very ancient architecture of the 15th century. Up to now, it has been the oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam.

Night market come out some of the busiest streets found in the Old Quarter, including Hang Duong, Hang Ngang, and Hang Dao. The market is approximately 3 km in length, and it starts at the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square and ends at the Dong Xuan market gate. Visitors are free to meander as they please, as the streets are prohibited from transportation.The market is free of commotion, as well, and visitors are instead greeted by locals conversing and music playing. The night market is open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night from 8 p.m. and is open late.

Built at the begin of the 19th century, the old house at no 87 Ma May street is one of the oldest houses in Hanoi built in the old pipe- shaped architecture. In that context, house style was a very popular architectural style in the past.
