Stop At: Minoiton Ormos Agios Nikolaos, Agios Nikolaos Crete 721 00, Greece

The town of Agios Nikolaos is the capital of Lassithi prefecture and stands on the shore of Mirabello bay on the east part of Crete's island. The point of attention is the lake of Voulismeni, found in the town center, surrounded by cafes and restaurants. The lake connects to the sea under a tiny road blue bridge and has a historical and geological significance due to its high depth. In the town, you can find many shops and on Wednesdays even an open-air market bazaar. Take your time for a walk to enjoy the views, enjoy some shopping or have a drink in one of the numerous cafes around the lake.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Pass By: Elounda port Parking, Elounda 720 53, Greece

The bus tour continues with the group heading to Elounda town, where we will embark on the boat and begin our sailing trip to Kolokitha Bay.

Elounda is a former fishing village on the northern coast of the island. Modern Elounda is very well known for the Five and Six stars luxury Hotels built in the area. A lot of them can be seen on the way to the port, where we embark to our private boat for the coastal cruise to Mirabello Gulf.

Stop At: Kolokýtha, Σχίσμα Ελούντας, Schisma Elountas, Greece

Following the coastline of Agios Nikolaos will get us to the Bay of Kolokytha, an unspoiled and away from civilization spot. While the BBQ meal is prepared from the crew and the captain, enjoy a swim in crystal clear turquoise water. The meal will be served on board, accompanied by a glass of wine or a soft drink.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Spinalonga (Kalydon), Elounda Bay, Elounda, Crete 720 53 Greece

At last but not least, make your way with the guided tour to Spinalonga where the legacy of the lepers marked its initials.

Spinalonga, the main attraction of the day, is a small island very close to Elounda and on the east part of the island of Crete. It is a place of historical memory as it accommodated in isolation people suffering from lepra until 1957. Through the centuries it has been inhabited from the Venetians, the Turks before it isolated the lepers. It has always been a tourist attraction, however after 2005 when Victoria Hislop a British writer wrote a historical novel “The Island” about how lepers lived on Spinalonga, hundreds of people come every day to honor a visit and learn the history of the place first hand.

I was very impressed with all aspects of the trip. The itinerary was excellent with just the right time allowed on each part of the trip. Adequate time (1 hour) in Agios Nikolaos, an introductory for a few minutes and all the time was free tim eot wonder around the shops. Spectacular views en- route to Elounda to meet the boat "Blue Star 1, we had an hour to swim in clear turquoise seas, although the beach which is small and busy most people choose to swim or forget the beach entirely and swim from the boat. The boat had lots of room (we went the last week of August with ample seating). The BBQ food was excellent freshy cooked/prepared we had pork and salad, glass of wine and an orange. There was a bar to purchase drink as well, although we didn't have any. Spinalonga was the highlight of the trip with fantastic views, excellent optional guided tours through the trip commentary was useful enroute from the hotels to Agios Nikolaos. We went with our 2 children aged 6 and 8 and they also had a great time and would recommend for families. The guides were official guides from the Greece Tourist Board and did a fantastic job of keeping the group to time and provided some really interesting optional history talks at Spinalonga.

Pick up (and drop off ) from our hotel in Sisi was well coordinated, the guide was totally bi-lingual (English and German) and that was not a problem because there were no long monologues in either language. The bathing off shore was fun for some people - but for those of us who didn't feel like it, it was lovely just sitting on the boat, enjoying the amazingly clear water, watching the fish etc. Don't have great expectations from the meal (we had vegetarian). Reading Victoria Hislop's book "The Island " beforehand really made the trip to Spinalonga and, Eastern part of Crete more meaningfull.
