About this activity
The tour starts from your Hilo hotel, port or the airport. Hop aboard a comfortable 11 passenger Mercedes van with your private group and head to our first destination, Hilo town. The town suffered large tsunamis in 1946 and 1960 and is rich in culture and history. Then, make your way to Queen Liliuokalani Japanese Gardens and Rainbow Falls State Park, both historic landmarks on the Island of Hawaii.
The next stop, Onomea Scenic Drive, is rated as one of the most important scenic drives on the Big Island of the Hamakua Coast Heritage Corridor. Drive along sea cliffs, through lush valleys and gulches, tropical rain forest, across small one lane bridges a true taste of old Hawaii. Drive down Sugar Mill Road past the old Pepeekoo Sugar Company down to the sea cliffs at Pepeekoo point.
Next, visit Pahoa, the small Hawaiian town in the Puna district most recently threatened by the most recent Lava flow that began June 27th 2014. Stand next to the Lava that threatened the town in early 2015. Drive down to the oceanfront town that was Kalapana, Kaimū and Kaimū Bay where 178 homes were buried under 50 feet of Lava during the 1986 Kilauea lava flow.
After, head north out of Kalapana and drive up the enchanting and historic Red Road. Navigate the Puna coastline through old lava fields, rugged coastlines with crashing waves breaking over the cliffs and amazing tree canopy of old growth forest. Pull into Ahalanui, a spring and ocean fed pool that is volcanically heated to a toasty 90 degrees, so bring a bathing suit and towel a for a very relaxing experience.
Finish off the tour with stops Richardson Ocean Park (Black Sand Beach) and Hono’s, where green Hawaiian sea turtles are usually spotted. The tour will end back at your original departure point. You are also provided a link to photos taken during your tour so that you can relive the experience long after you leave.
